Just sat down and watched 8mile again tonight, crazy how it’s been 15 years since it came out... what I want to know is what you all think is a classic film?

All of those got mainstream cinema release at their time. The two most explicit (The punishment of Anne and The Score) came at the height of art-porn cinema (late 70s) that drew big mainstream crowds.

The Score is a fabulous lifestyle movie (young housewife seduced to swing by bored neighbour in A Mediterranean costal town. Stars the beautiful Lynn Lowrey who is simply stunning. Beware tho - several cuts exist including on with a 7 minute male on male sex scene that was inserted for a release to the gay market. It’s perfectly fine in the context of the movie but a bit of a shock to even a modern porn audience as it’s otherwise quite Hetro-normative.

A fun fact is that it’s based on an off-broadway 70s play that the young Sly Stallone used to appear fully nude in.

Just have to echo True Romance.

Can you imagine what it would cost to put that cast together again (if they were all alive), with a Tarantino script and Tony Scott directing!

Absolute classic.

I will also take the opportunity to mention The Boondock Saints. Love it!

Tony died in 2012 so that might particular one might prove tricky.

Hence the If they were all alive comment

Gandolfini dead too, unfortunately, along with Chris Penn and Dennis Hopper.

Which reminds me of another classic, Blue Velvet.

Huh, those are some interesting choices alright. I've been meaning to watch Lloyd Kaufman's films after seeing that he was initially meant to be in Whit Stillman's Metropolitan and his story fascinated me. My knowledge of 'schlock' is pretty patchy at best.

Anyhow, my favourite films incl nearly all of David Lynch's filmography with some Max Ophuls and Lumet mixed in for some good measure

None of those are schlocky at all. For instance Daughters of Darkness is a lesbian vampire slow burn thriller as a glacial countess and her handmaiden seduce the wife of a English couple at an empty Belgian costal hotel The imagery is fantastic and it’s the clear inspiration for Americian Horror Story’s Hotel season.

Is there is a thread running through any of those movies it’s faded erotica -

Duke of burgundy - a strict S&M love story in a fantasy English Arcadia where there are no men.

Mullholland Drive - a repressed lesbian love murder story in 50s Hollywood

Sugar Cookies - S&M art murder in 70s New York

Score - swinger seduction in 70s France

Barbarella - 1960s space erotica

Countess Perverse - 70s Vampire lesbian seduction on the Italian coast.

The Neon Demon - modern gaudy LA underground with lesbian vampires seeking food among the young and downtrodden

Probably the Bowie movie ‘the hunger’ would be the most famous of this sort of thing. We love it - fashion, style, erotica, beautiful cinematography, beautiful naked women... can’t quite understand why anyone goes to see a marvel movie over that..

Allow me to mention Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. That's 2 good reasons I can think of straight away.

Not sure whether their Marvel/DC and I don't care.

"White Heat."

I love that golden era of gangster movies,Jimmy Cagney,Edward G Robinson,Pat O'Brian,George Raft,Humphrey Bogart.

Brilliant stars, brilliant movies and no need for the gore of modern movies, but the stars were menacing through their presence and acting.
