the right side of the river

I see there is a bit of talk about not having an election for president and just letting Michael d have a walk over.

But I think a great president would be Paul O'Connell.

The follow reasons,

Not mixed up in politics.

A natural leader.

Respected all over our island including both traditions in the northern part of our island.

Looks the part (ie not a lame legged leprechaun)

Could beat the shite out of probably any other political leader in the world.

So what do yeee think.

I'd be happy with Paul O'Connell and if I wasn't I wouldn't say it to his face.

He seems like a thoroughly decent gentleman to be fair.

Abolish the office of President, its only a mascot for the country and put the money to better use eg house the homeless or open more hospital beds.

No,not at all. It's just the way it's been that most of our presidents so far have come from political backgrounds. Mary McAleese wasn't involved in politics, nor was Douglas Hyde although he had tried a couple of times. Being "in" with a political party certainly gives you a good start when going out canvassing for votes though.

With the current disillusionment with politics I suspect soon enough we'll be electing celebrity presidents, god help us!

Fair enough. It's a huge advantage as you have a party to canvass for you and a party following that will vote for you no matter what, for the most part. Soon enough though, I can see a celebrity getting voted in.
