I wink when for some reason I am interested in the profile. If there is a wink back, I message.

It's just a quick way to indicate to the other person you're interested when you can't be bothered writing out a big long message, or don't have time to, or are not sure of getting a reply so don't wanna risk investing time in sending a message.
