relation has a Samsung but getting him a new one. what's an easy enoufh to use smartphone? prob best off staying with Samsung as he's used to it

Galaxy S7 is down to £365 on eBay, with the S8 around £500.

If that's too pricey, best budget phone is the Moto G5 at the moment, with the 3gb version best of the two models available, around £170 on Amazon.
