Any advice? Is this scenario likely to be true:

Manual engine, car power in 3rd/4th gear very weak, warning light on dash in 1st/2nd gear..

Go to garage, they say new brake pads, pipe washers, fluid and calliper on one side required...

Can't identify any problems with clutch/accelerator/gears after the brake work carried out..

My car is still under warranty for clutch work, but not for the brakes..

Are they spinning me a yarn or does this sound legit? Can brake fluid cause problems with car speed ?

Appreciate any help with this as I don't think flirting with the service manager is gonna get me anywhere lol

(via hubs) Worn pads on 1 side could cause acceleration probs if it was sticking but it would be red hot, smoking & you'd smell it as it burned away the pads. What was the warning light?

Without a look at car would need far more info but power and performance not effected by the repairs suggested. Could you pm a pic to me of the lights that appear on dash

Clutch gone will result in high r.p.m.(loud engine noise) In higher gears.

What make? Some cars like vw have a general check engine light and lots of minor things can set them off and when it is on car chugs abit until prob sorted

Depends on type of car, engine power not quite there? Sounds like it might be one of the coils....

Could be your EGR if its a turbo diesel.

The one on my car got stuck twice.

When you put the foot down it just bogg down.

Took it to a specialist who deleted/blanked it off.

Never had a problem since.

Go to another garage and nothing they suggesting would have you down on power.

If its a diesel the egr / turbo could be an issue though i had an issue with an exhaust sensor before which i bought on the internet and changed for less than a tenner when they where trying to sell me a new turbo for several hundred euro.

A diagnostic computer will tell them exactly whats going on but sounds like they are taking the michael. Have someone go to the garage with you if you can as sometimes they see a young girl and rub their hands together as they figure you wont have a clue.

Get a second opinion and let us know how you get on.

My car exact same issue with loss of power. Mechanic taking out some erg thing. He told me it is not necessary only in to cover regulations in some countries. But €220 to take it out. Special software etc etc. Losing faith in him

What car? I might be able to plug my diagnostics computer into it for you to see exactly what the engine management light is. Brake fluid can't cause problems with car speed.

Hi All

It's a diesel I30

The warning light was one of these = ! = in a little red circle

There was no burning or anything

I'm not sure what an EGR is lol

I'm quite distrustful of them cos I caught them out before, so was promised all sorts of great service from the garage manager... god I really wish I was like the girlfriend from My Cousin Vinny at time like this

I think an independent mechanic is the way to go - thanks all for the suggestions!

What car? That's your Exhaust Gas Recirulation valve, and €220 to remove it is ridiculous. Is he charging you to map it out of the ecu? There are blanking kits for the majority of EGR's that only cost a few quid

Agree with Foogey! It sounds like an engine could be misfiring.

Have a listen to engine, listen for an uneven spluttering sound. It may not be gearbox or clutch, it's just you notice it different ways in different gears if that makes sense.

Another thing to look out for is fuel spitting from exhaust when someone else pushes the accerator.

It could be as simple as leads or coil which isn't a big job.

Ah, that's a brake fluid warning light. The caliper must be severely seized to be causing problems with acceleration and speed. You'd usually hear the pad grinding on the disc.

Its an AudiA6 07 with 120k on the clock. He has serviced it since i got it in 08. Not a valve. Told me he has to get special software from UK. "Regular occurrence, no need for it, take it out, will even improve performance" Mechanic is extremely well qualified, lectures 3rd level etc

It has to be mapped out of the ECU so, otherwise the car will constsntly throw an EML. That's where the cost is coming from. Get him to remap the ECU while he's at it if that's a service he offers.

Go to an independent garage and ask him to put the computer on to see what the fault is. I had something similar with a car and a certain garage with pitstop in the name wanted to change spark plugs and coils to see wif that was is and quoated robbery prices. I called into a local garage that's always busy and I have never seen advertised. He put the machine on and told me the 2faults and said one could lead to the second been an issue and just replaced the 1 part and sorted turned over €600 in €100 to fix. Can't beat local.
