Soooo, Brexit begins and today I read a theory about when Scotland leaves the UK, NI & Wales could follow...If it happened do you think our neighbours would mind an update to their (but now our) name?

Wonder are we better sticking close to our near neighbours and not spend our days kissing Angela Merkels ass. European Union could fall apart in the coming years.

its a catch 22 situation

one our biggest trade partner is the uk and we export billions of euros worth of food to them

but

the eu props up our farming industry with grants which makes the food we export

I'd rather kiss Angela Merkels ass than Theresa May's, that's for sure.

We could invite the French to join us

No reason other than it would really piss the former United Kingdomers off

Sure May is Thatcher in disguise.....so I'm with you on that one.

Not too keen on Merkel either.

It's like she's finishing Hitler's mission without genocide.

Simply taking over Europe.

Brexit will most likely be the beginning of a long drawn out ending of the EU.

Also it looks like it'll pave the way for Scotland getting their independence and us getting a United Ireland.

Spain aren't the only EU members with similar breakaway state issues too so Scotland will have problems yes. Catalan wouldnt be rejoining under the same conditions as Scotland would in this instance though, Catalan isn't currently being taken out of the EU against the majority's wishes

Id rather kiss neither but for trade we depend too much on the Uk. Personally think the EU will fall apart in the coming years. Politics shouldnt dictate economics.

I'm not a fan of Mutti Merkel either, but to compare Merkel's rein and the running of the European Union with Hitler's mission is a bit far fetched. The EU was set up to establish a long lasting peace and a open European market. Moves like Brexit are threatening those achievements of decades and are a step back to Nationalism and borders, xenophobia and narrow mindedness. Unfortunately the Eu became a massive bureaucratic apparatus but is still the better vehicle than going back to where we came from. It needs a good slim down in policies and an overall reform back to its core duties.

The Spaniards have already agreed to keep the mouth shut with regard the Scotland's independence ambition. It's an entire different cookie as Scotland is it's own nation and just by the union treaty of the late 18th century the Scottish throne is occupied by the same person of the English throne

Catalonia was never an independent nation as such, at its best it was part of the kingdom of Aragon

What mind boggles me when looking up the Irish history prior to it's EU membership and prior to the billions of subsidies and infrastructure investments to help Ireland to grow , how anyone can come up with the idea Ireland would be better off outside the EU. Or whorse, that after hundreds of years of fighting the burden of British/English getting the idea that Britain maybe a better ally then the EU

Conclusion , there is to much SUN and other Murdoch tabloids used as source of information in this country

It needs a good slim down in policies and an overall reform back to its core duties. "

The EU was set up as a trading zone in 1957 based on an original Iron and Steel scheme. NATO has been the peace keeper with some notable exceptions. The EU had nothing to do with a long lasting peace which started in 1945 ie 12 years before the EU. It was a protectionist tariff free trading zone to protect local markets and restrict free trade for those outside the zone. Hence it's original name the European Economic Community.

It became the EU much later as part of its expansion to the current 27 countries. It remains a protectionist economic group but despite that Ireland Greece Spain and Portugal were all damaged economically by an unelected unaccountable elite who forced a one size fits all financially damaging solution on those countries during the market crash.

Italy and Spain and Greece have unemployment rates of 30% and higher for young people. It's model has failed dismally.

Free trade was an 18th century British movement. The EU does not promote or support free trade.

It has outlived its usefulness and we should be looking at solutions that work for the next 60 years not ones that are 60 years old and no longer fit for purpose..

NATO may had its contribution to keep bold war manageable towards the East block, but peace among the European countries is a result of cross border interaction and and integrative economies and the EZu provides the platform for it

The miserable situation in some of its member states is mainly due to mismanagement of its national government and administration combined with the usual evil of greed for short term profit. After all, the member states of the EU are subject to the economic cycle of bearish and bullish markets, the EU as such cannot avoid that It may can smooth some peins , even though it may not be recognized at level of each individual

It is easy to blame all failures on the EU but claim all successes on national effort. Surely EU needs reform and improvement, but it's benefits a surely worth the effort .
