"I've worked in this area but I've never known anyone to get live in care. Unfortunately the amount of home care people receive is constantly being cut- which is part of the reason I no longer do that work because it was hard to see people losing care hours. Taking care of anyone with Alzheimer's is a huge thing to take on. It's around the clock care that is required and sadly it only becomes more difficult as the disease progresses. There are lots of services that provide care, but very often at your own cost. I think you will need to do quite a bit of research in order to determine the level of care that you will be able to get. I wish you the very best of luck with everything. " Thank you, I'm hoping the post will send me in the right driction about where to look and ask x

"Live in home care is exspensive and the goverment dont give a lot of help either? We did it for a while where a schedule was done up with the family where some1 stayed everynite we got 6 hours a day homehelp which we had to contribute to and the whole family chipped so sum1 was there with nan the whole time this lasted nearly a year but was very demanding and only that we have big fanily would never have lasted that long! In the end we had no choice but find a nursing home as she started to get worse? We took our time and found a lovely home for her where csrers and nurses were great! Dont be fooled but it takes a huge ammount of time, and a lot of help to care for som1 in there own home" We know lol and one day she end up in a home, might be the best thing for her now, it's hard but her safety comes first

"OP my mum has vascular dementia and is now in care. We tried all sorts of everything to keep her in her own home but it was the night time which proved most challenging. Here in the north The Alzheimer's Society gave us life changing advice, I'm not sure about down your way but I really wish you good luck with this xx" We haven't asked there yet, and why not I have more idea! Nice one thanks hun x

"OP..Start with talking to your mothers GP. Its the quickest and most effective route to take and will save you doing the work. A referral to homecare companies will be made on your mothers behalf. Places like Allin Care , Careworld, Heritage Homecare can provide care packages. But, please be mindful that these care companies will only provide hours that are funded by the HSE, usually a maximun of 2 and a half hours per day. Any further care that is required outside of allocated hours, will be billed to yourself and your family and the costs can be overwhelming. Contact Alzheimers.ie. They can give you helpful advice and guidelines. If and when your mum isnt independent enough to remain at home, she might be eligible for The Nursing Home Support Scheme or Fair Deal. Its worth checking these out so youve covered all your options. While its a sad time for you in making decisions for your Mum, i wish you the very best xxx " Thank you for the advice and yes I think the website be the best place to start

"I think it says something about Ireland and the priorities set at a high level that families are left to deal with situations like this with so little support... It's quite depressing really... " Thanks x

"I worked in nursing homes/home care for years its very expensive and in some cases you end up needing to go for a nursing home as well! However it can be a lot easier on the person in need of care as its not such a huge change if you do go for home care please ask to see the persons garda vetting! I know of a few agencies who have had people working without it. As long as you are careful and thorough with your selection you'll be fine hope she is keeping well! " That is one thing we will be checking for, we hope to find an agencies that does all that as part of their protocol, thanks for the message x

Best of luck as i know it not too far down rd for me and my mum x" Fair play for looking after your mother at home. What you have been told is untrue as the majority of residents in both private and public (HSE) nursing homes/long term care settings are people with dementia. OP: The best thing is to go to your GP who can refer you to public health nurse, OTs etc and a care package can be arranged for you based on your assessment needs. It will only be a few hours a day but it will help. You would have to organise a rota with other family members if possible and may have to go down the route of a private carer which is very expensive. You can also avail of a certain amount of respite care. Im not 100% how many weeks are free but your GP/PHN can give you the info on that.
