Stop Smoking Support Thread !!

Ok so the plan is tomorrow is the day to stop !!

As discussed with " coantrimncpl2010"

This is our dairy, which we have agreed to be honest !!

So I'm nervous about the stopping, I have tried before and failed !!

Done patches

Done nicorette gum

Done nicorette mints

Done the e cig

So my first task tomorrow is to walk on past the garage and not walk into it and buy cigarettes

To a none smoker that may seem like a ridiculous task, but when your craving the nicotine, it's a hard thing not to give in and get the thing your craving is banging at your mind to get !!

Wish me luck !!

Good luck...

Change the route you walk to work so you don't go past the garage

Dont swap smoking for sweets etc... it doesn't work

Find something to replace the ciggies... try reading walking or anything that works... distraction always helps

Avoid smokers corner...not easy

Try meditating just for a few seconds when you want a smoke..

The only thing that really works is wanting it enough..

Physical addiction can be overcome in around a week... psychological addition takes longer...

Find a passion and use it as a distraction...

Don't think know of it as giving up something... the negative reinforcement of doing so means you concentrate on something missing and increases the desire to smoke..

Hardest part reprogramme your thoughts to something you want not something you have lost...

Don't count days or hours or minutes since you have stopped... it reinforces the negatives...

And do whatever works for you...

All the advice in the world can't overcome any addiction...you simply (yeah not easy I know)..

Do it one minute at a time...

Good luck....and if you do smoke don't beat yourself up... just move on and start again the next day...

Well done in making the decision to give up. One day at a time and hope it works this time.

We're both off cigs since 1st Jan. Justy did the patches, I'm vaping. Feel so much better for it.

Good luck and stay strong!

Hi I am on day 5 and going cold turkey , the worst times are when I'm driving and just after I eat. When the cravings come on , just think of something else, holiday memories, fantasies or anything not related to smoking, first week is going to be a bitch but it will get easier!! Eventually!! Good luck with it and if this bit of advice helps you stay off them, you can buy me a beer with a bit of the money you saved since giving the dirty, rotten smelly fags !!!

Good luck. Some tips...change your routine. Can you avoid walking past the garage in the mornings by going an alternate route? Bring some healthy snacks to work. Something to munch on if the cravings surface. Apparently a touch of salt on the tongue takes the craving away. Finally, remember this......

Each potential cigarette is a battle. You just need to get into a new habit of saying NO each time. When you do, celebrate it. Celebrate each No. Each is a mini battle which you will win, so celebrate them. Now go smash it girl.

Good luck

Just dig deep, cold turkey is the only way that worked for me. All the quit aids are a just a distraction .

The actual cravings only last a few minutes & do gradually get further apart .

Brush your teeth, eat an orange ..whatever works..

If you need to vent or feel weak . Message me ...

You can do it!!! X

Hey Laura

Doing cold turkey this time, the e cig just had me keeping the routine, I was smoking it in the morning with my coffee and when I was on a break at work etc

So need to break the routine as well

Chewing gum helps the cravings, put the money you would have spent on smoking in a glass jar and watch it grow every day, the last time I was off the smokes I saved €1400 !

Keep telling yourself you can do it and don't beat yourself up to much if you slip up, I'm 3 weeks off them and it's amazing how much they stink when you stand beside a smoker

The best advice I can give is to not put yourself under too much pressure at the start. Tell yourself you can have a cigarette if you want at any time but ask yourself if you really want it. This way you don't feel like you're depriving yourself. I found this helped me a lot. Anytime I had a craving I just told myself to give it an hour and see. Before you know it you'll be off them a few days, weeks, months and then years.

With regards methods, different things work for different individuals. I went cold turkey and it worked for me. I recommend reading up on the timeline of the benefits of quitting.

After 3-4 days, all the nicotine is out of your system and after 7-10 days you no longer are physically addicted to nicotine and it's all psychological after that. This fact was the big one that helped me continue to stay off them

Good luck and just keep reminding yourself that it will be one of the best decision you'll make.

I had a cigarette about 4pm, all the smokers pass me in work and the temptation became to much !!

I felt I was missing out on the gossip and banter

So tomorrow I must try harder !!!

I've tried patches, vaps etc and it didn't work, e cig just had me thinking ah shit I want a real cigarette !!

So cold turkey !!

I honestly think it's the routine I have with smoking is harder than the withdrawel ....

I get up in the morning and get a coffee and a cig. .

I get ready for work then get a coffee and a cig. ...

I walk to the train station and get a cig before I get the train to work ....

I get off the train and have a cig before I go into work ....

So its the routine Im going to find hardest :-/

Off smokes over 2mths now after several failed attempts too. Had idea in my head but didn't set a date to just stop. Then decided one day today's the day. Paid €65 for e-cig & using menthol flavour juice in it 18mg strength. So far so good. Best of luck with your attempt this time around.

Just look forward to the freedom you'll have and all the extra time you'll have to do other stuff.

I'm almost 18months of them and I'd tried everything on the market to try getting off them and nothing worked because they were just alternatives to smoking and they were constant reminders. I went cold turkey and it's not that hard if your really ready to give them up.

Good luck op I hope you get to enjoy the freedom.
