Best way is to go to a meet and greet be nice introduce yourself just for the verifications without expectations and build from there

As a guess maybe members that joined knew those that got the site up and running and were verified by them. They in turn verified their friends on the scene and back then you could even verify by phone. It wouldn't be long for the network of verified members to spread far and wide. Maybe?
