What has Sydney Uni got to do with it?

Newtown

So aside from the knowledge that in Irish law it's still based on magazines use of photos, so an unauthorized pic will be taken down within 30-60 days (can't remember which one).

And basically signing up to the rules of this site permits them to use what they like, I still can't figure out why Sydney university did that people are giving them a nice mention on their pages?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Also I'm not a lawyer today fm's Matt Cooper gave me the insight referenced above.

Just to look at this from a different perspective, Copyright is a form of property. It can be sold, traded or given away, but only with the explicit permission of the owner. The originator of any image or literary work is automatically the owner of the copyright in either of those works, and it is not necessary to make any disclaimer or other statement to strengthen these rights.

But just as with other property, a copyright owner needs to be aware of the threats to their work. Just as you would lock your car when leaving it in a town but not necessarily do so when you leave it in your garage, posters on your forum need to bear in mind that if their images are 'attractive' to others there is an increased likelihood of them being copied. The internet offers ample oportunity for images to be copied in breach of copyright, firstly because it is easy to do, and secondly because there is a culture amongst many users that such things are free for the taking. There is also some impunity because the rightful owner faces real difficulty in finding that his images have been used without permission, and since this could happen anywhere in the world, there are difficulties and expenses involved in bringing the infringer to court. Therefore if individuals do not want their images etc stolen they should think carefully before posting them on any part of the internet. A statement such as those you describe will offer no extra protection whatever.

While it's not a deciding factor, we do look unfavorably towards people who have such warnings on their profile. This is a discrete experience for us and we would worry a little about someone who is so gullible. Again, not a deal-breaker... But maybe a tie-breaker lol.

To put it a little more bluntly, we use it as an idiot filter

To put simply, EVERYTHING you willingly and deliberately post publicly on a social network is in the public domain. That is everything you post on Fab, except that in a private message (PM) is in the public domain.

Anyone can use, copy, distribute anything in the public domain without permission, as long as they don't claim ownership of the work.

Even if you have that blurb on your account, it can't stop Sydney university from using your data. They can legally copy and public your data, as long as they don't claim to be the creator.

And even if they do claim to own it... What are any of us gonna do? Fly to Austrailia and sue them? :/

I kinda see it as a statement of 'everyone else is doing it is we should'

So does anyone know what Sydney university have actually done?

Do they go around perving and stealing some of the more magnificently worded personals for their own dastardly use in the staff room?

I would love to have gotten government funding to research a swing website, imagine getting your PhD title read out to the graduation hall,

'The struggle of illiterate single males in a swing website environment, a study'

Priceless reaction from your parents
