irish language is dying, lets save it:-)

Wud b lovely too speak our irish language constantly, greeting our friends, on socials, we hear people from other countries here speaking amongst themselves, with their friends, wudnt it b up too us, too keep it up, we are irish afterall, so why not practice it more,

What are your views on it, are u happy with speaking english, or would you like speak more, as gaeilge,? cupla focail no harm now and again,

Not everyone in ireland can speak the language. I find it hard with my children and there homework .

I did most of my schooling in the uk so I haven't a word of Irish- makes homework very difficult !

I hear you . I do think my daughter is saying anything to me when she is speaking it . I just praise her saying good girl that's brilliant.

the problem with Irish well that found was that you are or where thought it to pass an exam not to use it in every day the same could be said for most subjects though. i lived in north wales and a much bigger percent of people speak welsh on a daily basis.

Yah i know its a shame that we have forgotten it, and our kids know more, than we do, or if we hear the irish news we dont know what their saying, and some one visiting from america or uk says, what are they saying, ur anwer is, i don't know, how embarrasing!!

Apparantly if u join the gardai, irish is essential, i havent heard one gardai yet speak irish,

...not really..pass Irish leavingcert is enough ...if you want to be a guard in Irish speaking areas however,you need to be fluent...but you're Entitled to extra money.

Agree with you Angelic, would do no harm to throw a few words and phrases in here and there to keep ourselves ticking over and the guys who don't have any Irish will pick some up aswell .... In fairness I do see a good few drop a word or line in their posts, so Aslong as its not confusing/alienating people then it can only be a good thing

All my primary school learning was done through irish, but I've always felt better able to write it than to speak it. I understand a lot that I hear, but the biggest problem I have is the Irish I learned is not the same as what's being taught in schoolbooks, so it's harder for me to understand it.

I'm not passionate about the language, but I'd hate to see it disappear. Labhair í agus mairfidh sí

I went too irish college in the gaelteacht, for summer periods, no mobile phones were used, no harm, but had great times their, and my son is now fluent also, i encouraged him to go for summer, he loved it, met lovely friends their, even canadian, american and english and scottish, were intrested, so id encourage your kids to spend time their, every activity thru irish only, sport so on, learnt so much,

I was fluent in school and when a visitor came my teacher would always ask me to stand up and he would show me off to them as if to say 'look at my amazing teaching skills'.

Years later I've lost about 75% of what I once knew.

I love to hear it spoken but it unfortunately it's used as a political pawn here in the north. There is thousands being spend making multi lingual road signs for about 2% of the population that can understand it. Money that could be better spent elsewhere.

I'd love to have a cúpla thousand focail. I know there isn't much practical use for it in the everyday, but it's a great thing to have a native tongue!

I blame the way its taught in schools, most of us study Irish in school for 14-15 years yet couldn't hold a basic conversation with it. All I remember is rhyming stuff off so i would pass exams etc. Such a waste of time I'd love to speak it fluently and would love to see it in everyday life but unfortunately if its not taught diff( don't know what way its taught now), its dead!

Our kids are at a Gael scoil. Full immersion
