Can Irish people enjoy a drink without complaining of a hangover the next day?

This is not aimed at anyone, it just popped Into my head as something I'd like to see discussed.

Apart from the English, many other countries around the world are known for enjoying a drink and not going too far/overboard. (I've travelled a lot and discussed this btw)

Why can't the Irish do this? Is it stupidity? Selfishness?

My opinion is immaturity as it seems to be something that's labeled "cool" by many Irish people and they laugh about how inebriated they were to a point that they don't remember things, how that's funny I have no idea.

I am willing to listen to opinions because for me, I just don't get how that's funny...

Personally doesn't bother me. I rarely drink so don't suffer hangovers.

But live and let live.

Not as easily aggrieved as you OP

I've read that statiscally we don't consume more alcohol than any other nation . It seems we just like getting shitfaced. Allegedly the biggest drinkers are the Japanese. Must pace themselves though or they wouldn't be able to hold them cameras still long enough for the holiday snaps

"Why so serious "

I'm just curious about other opinions, we have a serious problem with alcohol and it's being labeled as having the Craic.

Why don't people actually examine the issue?

On the continent the beer is generally nice enough that you don't get that bad of a hangover.

I don't see the point in drinking if your not going to get d*unk, personally when I drink I drink to get d*unk, I don't see the point in having one or 2 drinks! Except maybe a glass of wine with dinner to complement the food.

My problem is I drink Southern Comfort and it goes down too easy so I end up drinking too much but thankfully it's not often I drink. If I drink wine it's usually only a glass or two and I'm fine. If I'm out I do drink enough to at least make me feel tipsy because I feel anxious in pubs or clubs and self conscious. It helps me relax. Learning to slow down though.

This I don't get at all. I think once in my teens I drank to get d*unk, but not since. I don't like being d*unk.

What generally annoys me is when other people think they know my limits.

I say when my night ends. be it 10pm midnight or 9 am the next morning. and i'll pace myself accordingly.

when i say no to having another one and they start pressuring me I usually reply "you've got to promise to clean it up" and they usually back down after that.

A lot have no self control to manage their own drinking. Something I never had a major problem with myself but I'm certainly in a lot more control in the last decade or so.

I find 'very d*unk women' a very unattractive look

There is always someone looking to complain, just because they don't understand it.

Opinions are like arseholes, every one has one and if people want to get d*unk and suffer with a hangover the next day, let them.

Not irrelevant at all it establishes the posters charter u can not be totally negilant on such an issue as sexual health and stand in judgment on another it's his choice to go bare back as it's theirs to drink

I dont think it's irrelevant, it's his opinion or views on drinking that not every one is going to agree with.

But to judge people for drinking almost saying that they are irresponsible and to make a comment like that about unprotected sex so openly on the forums, why shouldn't it be brought up here???

Personally I, like a fellow poster, don't get hangovers. I am knackered tired the next day but head is usually fine. Why? Because I stick to certain drinks I know won't screw me up, such as don't drink/mix wine and cider or whiskey with anything else. I can drink red wine, Guinness and a few Bacardi and diet Coke in a night and be fine the next day. If I had thrown a whiskey/cider/white wine/beer in with that, I'd be bollixed the following day.

Why do we do it? Because, for me (or IMHO for the texter gang), it's fun, makes us feel good and YES!it lets our inhibitors relax and we do stuff we might not normally do. If this is sexy stuff, wahey! If it's violence, give up booze full stop.

Not sure I agree with bringing OP comments about bareback into it but I do know some women prefer that, so each to their own, but not for me thanks, prefer to have some protection and still have fun (yes I effing know it doesn't protect from crabs FO!)

Ok rant/opinion over.

I also note OP effectively threw a match into a petrol can and walked away and we all came with our own supply of petrol while OP is smiling down from a far away hill!

"Personally I, like a fellow poster, don't get hangovers.

I also note OP effectively threw a match into a petrol can and walked away and we all came with our own supply of petrol while OP is smiling down from a far away hill!"

...lots of sense made here....so many jump on their hobby horse too and instead of adding to forum it causes/stirs up a nastiness which is so prevent on many of these posts. Those who seem to criticise the OP for being judgemental have in fact inadvertently lowered themselves to the same.

Would be nice to read some good objectively written posts without so much slagging which seem to often drop the tone of Irish posts.

To answer OP.... no idea, I've never been d*unk, had my eyes opened wide when I was young and seen the damage, abuse, mess and heartache that alcohol abuse brings about and often wonder why? I guess like with most things few of us think these can ever happen to us or that we could ever do these to others. Some drink to forget, some to relax, some to feel accepted into a group and some need it for a fun night. Others don't need it for any of these. We're all different and we see things differently too because of where we have come from and different experiences.

"This is not aimed at anyone, it just popped Into my head as something I'd like to see discussed.

I beg to differ, I lived aboard for nearly 15years and have had the pleasure of meeting and mixing with many different nationalities and experiencing many different cultures, including our own community when living outside of Ireland. And in my experience I found the Irish to be social drinkers, obviously it's an occupational hazard when one drinks one is going to get d*unk, but I've found, Irish and myself especially drink to socialise. I know my limits, I've never enjoyed been shit faced, but it has happened from time to time, but tipsy, that's where I live. Enough to get the shoulders moving, and up on a dance floor with out the fear of making a fool of yourself, which one inevitablely does.

"Personally I, like a fellow poster, don't get hangovers.

I also note OP effectively threw a match into a petrol can and walked away and we all came with our own supply of petrol while OP is smiling down from a far away hill!

...lots of sense made here....so many jump on their hobby horse too and instead of adding to forum it causes/stirs up a nastiness which is so prevent on many of these posts.

"

Deleted by accident...

Well said, and I note that I asked for opinions to understand things more, opinions change when education comes into it.

Quite a few need educating on here it seems. My bareback comment was a joke but leave it to those not to mention the winky face and to condemn it without a thought (I suppose that's a struggle for some).

Amn thank you to those who messaged me kindly

"My opinion is immaturity as it seems to be something that's labeled "cool" by many Irish people and they laugh about how inebriated they were to a point that they don't remember things, how that's funny I have no idea.

I am willing to listen to opinions because for me, I just don't get how that's funny..."

Many find drinking to get d*unk funny not sure too many laugh at barebacking...just saying

Yeah, to use something that blanks your memory and causes you to have no self control over your actions is hilarious... Genius. My EMT friend would surely agree with you...

I love have you have nothing on me so keep resorting to a sarcastic joke I made.

I've just reported you because I've clarified my bareback comment, saying I have never done it and you're like a dog with a bone. Trying to insinuate that I only bareback is manipulating people into thinking I may be spreading STI'S. You are a nasty person and I think admin should deal with you promptly.

I'm not sure you thought your foolish question through. In 2016 bareback doesn't lead to the death of thousands of people each year, drinking however, does.
