Does anyone else think film remakes have just gone to the dogs.. I mean have you seen the add for the new Ben Hur???? Who ever owned the rights to that classic film and then gave someone permission to remake it needs to be shot..

They're remaking Stephen King's IT. Could be good if it does justice to the book, which scared the bejaysus out of me!

I do believe that the original film is one of the reasons why a lot of people are scared of clowns!

The writer/director of back the the future has stated that while he's alive there'll never be another sequel or remake of it.

And he's right. The first BTTF is practically a perfect movie.

I hear ye.....

Remakes/sequels/prequels and marvel is the money ticket these days.

The last star wars films (which I didn't bother to watch) are the original film again to attract I'm the new generation

I saw the suicide squat last night and past a poster/saw a trailer for "the Blair witch"

But the biggest let down for me in recent years was "Avatar" I really wanted to like it but it's just a remake of dances with wolves !

And I'm so not buying into this 3D thing..... if I wanted to blind myself I'd go in a wankathon

It shows a lack of talent. very few new stories in the movies. almost all the remakes are no where near as good as the originals. Most of the time nobody wants to see them.

I disagree. I'm sure there's plenty of new talent. It's just the studios no longer want to take risks. why put work and effort into a fresh idea in case it bombs, when you can remake or reboot a classic and you can bank on an instant audience?

Just watched a documentary on the making and initial buzz about Kevin Smith' first movie clerks, which is a favourite of mine. He decided one day that he hadn't seen a movie which accurately showed how his generation spoke and interacted.....so he made it himself. 27,000 dollars of his own money that he scrimped and saved.

It got noticed by the right people at the right time, and it was bought by a distributor for 227,000 dollars and it launched his career. that was over 20 years ago. I'm not sure similar risks are being taken today.

I was talking about the studios and the money men.

There is a lot of talent around but not many will take a risk.

Alot of the better movies coming out are made on small budgets. They only get made because a good director or actor gets involved.

And yes clerks is a classic. At the same time a few other young writer directors did the same thing with great results. hopefully some more of them will come along soon.

I agree. Most of them are pointless crap, not even re-imaginings of the originals, just piggybacking on the brand. Very few decent remakes made.

It's Impossible to compare remakes to some of their classic counterparts..I mean the chariot race alone in the original done without any special effects and all own stunts wipes the floor with the shit cgi in the new 1

Film rights revert back to the original owners if nothing has been done with the property in so many years.

Which is why there are so many awful branded films. Producers wanting to force a film out when the date is running close so they can hold onto the rights, noone cases about the actual film.

No. If you're lucky enough to be in a situation to not see an original always watch the remake first. Then you'll enjoy the remake, watching it with on expectations.

Then go treat yourself to the original. Them you get to enjoy both.

Yeah, the original ( which was made without getting the rights) was just a single reel. Wonder if it was an abridged or just the highlights

Before Zemeckiss made BTTF he was doing a studio film with promise of getting to do his own through the studio. He was making Romancing the Stone, the studios hated the dailies & said he'd made a mess of the film. They hated what he did, said he'd wasted their money & the fIlm would flop.

He turned around & said whatever & went & made BTTF independently.

Romancing the Stone did very well but BTTF, which the studio could have owned, did MUCH better.

Just goes to show how pathetically terrified studios are to take a risk
