Making a discussion personal

Why is it that so many people here who feel like they're losing in a conversation feel the need to take jabs against you personally??

Is this a forum for adults or kids?

I try not to think of it but it comes across as bitterness.

Define personal?

I've had many a civil discussion with people I've disagreed with without it getting personal. Sometimes however I'd bring the same level of civility to others and they'd get utterly defensive and insulting.

So it would seem personal is a subjective term....

I've disagreed with people here with no issue, however those people kept the conversation on topic. Personal to me is moving away from the topic and directly making negative comments against the person making them.

You can comment on people as a whole but when you directly aim it at someone, intending to offend them I think it becomes something of a lower form.

Ive two boys here 12 and 8 and they don't act as childish as some on the forum. People are either going to agree or disagree shouldn't be any reason for things getting personnel on a Forum unless they already have issues with each other, even then it's crazy. Past few days reading some of the posts doesn't show a very positive picture of Swinging to be honest. Think we all need to remember why we joined.

There's a very small section of the forum community which seems to enjoy creating a bit of friction. A little dig here, a tiny jibe there. "Sure it's all a bit of harmless fun"; except it's not, not really. And it's been all over this forum for quite a while. It's hard to stomach at times and much easier to log off.

So subtle most don't realise, unless it's directed at them or they've had it happen to them before. I was bullied like this for a while on another site, by one of the more popular members there, a very frequent poster. It was only when I spoke out about it that it became clear. Many a very nasty jibe can be hidden behind a smiley icon.

Oh the irony of some of this!

I enjoy the threads for the topics and banter and yes it can turn nasty sometimes and it can be upsetting but we all have an on off button that we are in control of or the choice to interact or not. I like interacting and enjoy the debate and information you get from the threads. At the end of the day it's a large group of people just giving their personal opinion which is what it is designed for and interacting with one another. It turns nasty when people start to take a disagreement as personal and make it personal.

There are so many of these threads giving out that it is bullying when in my opinion a difference of opinion is a healthy thing as is humour. Not a mention ever that when humour takes the thread off topic it actually deflects a lot of arguments so I want to thank all the humourous comedy acts on the threads instead of accusing them of bullying because they refuse to take it personal or get upset by it all. And as for the people using these threads for personal swipes at others....has that been mentioned.

Not a smiley in sight...just my tuppence worth.

There's a lot of sense being spoken here. I personally block and ignore people but it gets a bit much when you can't comment anywhere without them following you and make snide comments.

I don't agree with allowing people to continuously jab at others where you're expected to ignore it. You don't know anyone's history or background on here, or that they may have a mental illness like depression, so as an adult you're expected to have some cop on and take that into consideration.

The jabs are done in a sly way to wind people up so they go on the attack, that's when others join in to defend that person, or help them by taking more jabs because you now look worse because you've made more noise.

It's also bizarre that people agreeing with others about trying to make it a more positive place are the very people I've seen make several snide remarks (not everyone before you all go on the attack).

I'm learning very quickly what kind of place this is and surprisingly had quite a few emails to tell me I'm not being paranoid about this place, there's seems to be a history here.

If find a lot of disagreements overflow from other threads. People disagree on something, it gets a bit heated and nasty. When one of the parties comments on a different thread (here for instance) the second person sees it as a good opportunity to throw a cynical comment back. Arguments have to be two way. Ignore and don't go for the bait is my advice.

We do not know what is behind any keyboard op and yes this makes some people very brave in taking it to a personal level. The threads are a tough place as is fab but you focus on the good and it's worthwhile. The threads are about different opinions and in true fab fashion each to their own opinion.

It has been said before that the threads is not a place for anyone suffering depression as it can be too harsh for those suffering from it. Personally I think if a person is suffering from depression, the internet in any form is not the place to be but that is just my opinion. This may sound harsh but is not intended to be but in my opinion as an adult, life does not get out of your way...you have to find ways around it and respectfully so.

A lot of passive aggressive swipes from people taking stuff personal but that also is in all walks of life too. The threads take time to figure out and all the politics and how some play it, cloak and dagger under the guise of being bullied. Some cases may be valid but remember not all claims are genuine and this applies to all walks of life.

For me humour, banter, information and interaction is why I am here...and each to their own. Happy fabbing.

Other forums have an ignore function, where you don't see replies by users you place on an ignore list. I think fab could definitely benefit from that.

"There's a lot of sense being spoken here.

"Other forums have an ignore function, where you don't see replies by users you place on an ignore list. I think fab could definitely benefit from that.

Or you could just take the decision to ignore the posts of those you wish to avoid."

I was looking for an ignore button, I'm surprised they don't have it as it's on almost every other forum website. It shows who's actually sly enough to play the victim, while not using the "ignore" showing them up as the real bully/issue.

Agreed, but ultimately you have control only over your own actions.

If you wouldn't suffer negativity or drama in any other walk of life then on here should be no different.

We all have the capacity to choose whether or not to ignore a person or a situation as we personally see fit.

There'll be arguments, insults and childishness while there'll also be fun, banter and interesting discussion. Fab, like anything esle, is what you make of it.

It's like going into a small local bar. There's always a few regulars at the bar with a sense on entitlement.

They will find out as much info about you as they can and use it against you later if you don't agree with them. They will bully and harass people and then feign sympathy in an effort to cover up their behaviour.

These people think they're funny, cool and popular when in fact they are the village idiots. They fear losing their popularity and will do anything to keep it.

"Why is it that so many people here who feel like they're losing in a conversation feel the need to take jabs against you personally??

Is this a forum for adults or kids?

I try not to think of it but it comes across as bitterness.

2 people in particular are worst offenders for this..1 from carrickmacross the other the far side of Newry "

...we've been here quite a while, to date we haven't tried to dehumanise any other forum users, by referring to them as "it"

"It's like going into a small local bar.

"
