A net loss of £88,200,000 on a transfer has to be the worst deal ever made in football. This actually makes United a laughing stock and more to the point makes Ferguson a laughing stock. Since he rated Pogba as not good enough for the premiership. Maybe it's Jose's way of taking the piss out of him.

very bad move from Utd, egg on face for sure, maybe with shirt sales and if hw stays for a good long term it might re coup the loss

Pretty much every manager, agent..etc will tell you that the vast majority of players are not worth what they are bought and sold for. But it's market conditions.

If clubs like Real Madrid, Barca are willing and able to pay those prices and you want to compete with them on the European stage you need to shell out.

The cash they'll make in Asia on shirt sales alone will be immense.

They will have factored all that in but any signing is a calculated risk.

They broke it down in saying Utd make 120 mill per season in sponsers so 30 mill a year for Pogba is pocket change to them

Yep, exactly this.

People look at the price tag and newspaper headlines and have a reflex reaction. No business (and it is a business) shells out that type of cash without assessing the risk.

Biggest risk with Pogba is Mourino pissing him off.

It's all relevant. Only time will tell if he's worth it.. but money dictates the game these days. 89 million to united is like 15 for west ham. They generate vast amounts of money and personally rather see it used on players then lining the glazers pockets

It's not the price tag that's the issue. Those are the market prices. It's the fact they sold him for £800,000 as "not being good enough for the premiership" that makes it a joke.

You forget that he did nothing at united with the chances he was given. He simply didn't put the effort in and didn't deserve a starting place so from that point of view he was useless to united ad certainly didn't make a laughing stock of Fergie. He had potential but chose not to use it. It's a disgusting fee for a man but he'll cover that in shirt sales in two years if he's marketed in the right manner. It's a simple case of spending money to make money.

He ran down his contract and Utd got €200,000.

No one ever said he wasn't good enough for the prem.

But let's not let facts get in the way....

Lol I can see it now, Jose sitting in th office thinking lets spend €89 million on pogba to make Fergie look stupid, and not take any advice or do any research, or do due diligence on the deal.

Yep I'd say that's the way it went down ok.

Everton done good business, in getting Ashley Williams in for John Stone.

Better centre half in my opinion.

Sorry you're correct, Ferguson said he wasn't good enough for United, not that he wasn't good enough for the premiership he'd be fine for Sunderland or somewhere of course.

With regard to fergie been a laughing stock. The man won his last title with united by 11 points.

Now they have improved that team by about 350 million euro to finish 15 points behind Leicester city !

The mans a clown alright.

On the Pogba story you have to wonder what the lads are smoking on these deals !

And wonder how much Keane,Gerrard,Vieira and Zidane would fetch in todays market !

That's it though, you can't compare. Realistically for £89m he'd want to get you 50 goals along with 50 assists and a bucket load of defensive tackles.

Fees are gone crazy, Stones for £50m? Purely because he is English.

It's crazy money in the real world but this isn't the real world it's the premier league

I'm an Arsenal Fan but believe they are buying potential in today's market and if he brings them the title then worth it.

He is not overrated just overhyped but is a quality player who show it maybe not first season but has 5year to prove it.

No point having money in the bank if they don't spend it and they have.

One thing thou... shirt sales don't cover transfer! Adidas make the money and clubs get a tiny tiny percentage but the money from adidas was upfront as as sponsor.

You don't go from not being good enough, to the most expensive signing in a clubs history, in the space of five years. The fee isn't ridiculous in a modern sense. Though from what I have seen of Pogba, he's good but not even remotely in the same class as Ronaldo or Messi. The reality is though if his goals bring the title, then he's worth 40 million straight off, that's modern football. However since he cost more than the entire Leicster squad that won it last year, somethings out of whack. If Pogba had never been a United player this wouldn't be an issue, history is relevant sometimes and certainly is in this case.

Nope, nothing to do with it.

As Mourinho said, smaller clubs never had this issue, as you need to be at a huge club to pay that money.

Small club supporters will never understand.

If United go on to have a period of success then its worth it. You can't judge a players worth until you see what he delivers.

If United win nothing in the next few years then yes its a waste of money. If Pogba becomes the best in the world and United win titles consistently then he will have been worth it.
