Opinions on personal training

Hi all

Just looking for people's opinion. I am a qualified personal trainer but never have taken it as a career yet - I am an engineer for time being.

I'm looking to start PT full time but just looking for people's opinions - especially all yee women

From your own experience or preference, would you be more comfortable trying to get that bikini body in private .i.e train in your own home/garden?

Or would you prefer to go to a gym or a trainers own gym and train there?

Which would you be more comfortable with?

Appreciate all views

Thanks

If your just starting out why dont you take advantage of the good weather n use local parks. Would save you a fortune in gym rent as well

"Don't come across creepy and targeting women for bikinis body"

I wasn't been creepy. I was only saying women as an example as they seem to be nervous about training in front of people or getting the confidence to go to a gym or personal trainer.

It can be seen as male orientated hobby sometimes is all

Do you gave any qualifications OP and if so what are they. Like I said before many call themselves PT's because they spend more time in the gym than most but are seriously under qualified to teach other or mess about with people's diets. It's dangerous and negligent of any gym to let an un qualified PT near customer

- Level 4 PT and recognised by REPS

- 3 year degree (level 7) in strength and Conditioning from an Institute of Technology

I'm not a gym head and as you can see by my pic I'm not a bodybuilder type. I'm more into sports and having a 'toned' body would impact my performance on the field.

I encourage movement and healthy eating. I'm a big believer in protecting your body for the future more so than 'looking good'

I know there are under qualified PT'S but I am involved in a few teams and footballers/hurlers the last few years. I'm not saying I am super qualified but I'd like to think I'm more qualified than the 6 week course PT'S is all

In that case guys like you should be promoted more by gyms rather than mates of the owners. Good luck with your venture

You say in your opening post that your target market is women who want to look good in bikini and then say your a PT whos into healthy living more than looking good??

All PTs should look good and promote healthy living.

If you don't 'look good' how can't you help others too?

Well I'm a PT and have a job and my advice would be try and gt a job in a gym first to build up ur experience just because ur a PT don't mean u knw it all the best PT are the once who are always trying to better themselves for there clients to maximum result remember this 1 % better every week leads to a leaner stronger fitter you with lot of energy and a balanced deit is the way to go and also multi vitamin are not gd fr ur health either believe it or not !

If that was your opening statement to me as a new client I'd turn around and walk out. No offence

Title of thread is opinion on personal trainers and my opinion based on years in many gyms is most of them are full of shite

Where do I start?

I never said I'm targeting women? I was only asking a question as most woman go to the gym to get that bikini body - am I wrong?

So all PT'S have to have that brilliant body or otherwise they are no good? I will never have a "six pack" while I'm playing sport. It would be very unfeasible to me as I need my carbs for energy otherwise my performance will dip.

I think it's ridiculous that all PT's have to look "good" otherwise they aren't any good! Plenty of top S&C coaches, PT's etc out there that are excellent but don't have a "good body"

That's the problem. The market is gone so condensed, it's hard to get your name out there. But sure where there's a will there's a way

You need a selling point. What makes you better than that guy done the gym with a six pack who must obviously know what he's doing.

Having qualifications is good but what do they mean? I don't know the difference between what you have and what someone who's the mate of the owner.

You're involved already with teams, that's good. How about designing an off-season program for whatever sport it is? Or an in-season training program focusing on active recovery between games? Let some of the team members do it free to build brand awareness and draw in those from teams you aren't involved in.

Blogging seems to be how guys make it big these days. Your own YouTube channel, blog get your name out there. Again, you'll need an angle to stand out.

Once you've built up the above you could then look at the private clients. None of the above would require to quit your job or you could look at going part-time for a bit to see how it panned out first.

Personal trainers scare the crap out of me. Not all of us want bikini bodies, just to have smaller tums and bigger bums and to be fit and strong. I've had them in the past and they did nothing but show me a few exercises and give out when I didn't do do well. I'd love one I just clicked with but its probably my level of disgust with exercising that doesn't help

Sorry if I'm came across negative but for an opinion yes it's an over-saturated market but apply yourself and give it your full time attention.

Don't chase the money but improve your brand/business.... give away good knowledge, write blogs and maybe try find a market whether it be your area then you talk about your sporting background so maybe your clients there rather than avg Joe.

You can't appeal to everyone and on else you find your niche... use that! S&C coaches is probably your way forward

Im not. That's just been my experience with them. I've met a few personal trainers from here and only 1 hasn't been up his own arse. Seriously, I had to sit through a lecture about the benefits of a trainer. I wasn't sure if I was on a social meet or a sales seminar.

Im a personal trainer but I spend my time doing group fitness classes and coaching teams and the other half doing PT. I found it easier to market myself first at classes as people get to see what you're really like and how you interact. Most of my private clients have come to me through my classes and I can offer them my classes in their overall training programme.
