Just got a thing on facebook about notices going up in public places about 'Dangerous dogs', which included pit bulls (amongst others).

Disgusting waste of taxpayers money! There are no bad dogs, only bad owners!

I was walking the local park last week and saw a pitbull off a lead with its owner. The pitbull went to attack a smaller dog. People intervened and stopped damage. What I don't understand is, if u know ur dog is cross and or fights why don't u have him tied up while walking all the time

Some dog breeds are genetically designed for fighting and can be a risk to the public. Ones that have been handled incorrectly even more so. Even well looked after dogs can snap sometimes under specific circumstances. When meeting one of these breeds you have no idea how it's been treated in the past. They should be kept on leads and muzzled at all times in public places. It's just not worth the risk. I didn't see the programme, but I'll try and catch it online.

Dogs aren't GENETICALLY designed to fight.

If ever I've read a most ridiculous comment, it just happened now. Genetically? Really?

Dogs that attack are dogs that have been trained to do so, been raised in a bad environment or they have been mistreated.

Experts everywhere. Genetically DESIGNED. We have scientists designing dogs genetically?

I'm assuming you got your terminology all muddled. I'm hoping.

And for the record, the most boring incidents involve different breeds. Not restricted breeds. That motion Alan the ago called politician piping out of his you know what hasn't a clue.

On the radio today he said he had a Labrador cross. The best dog in the world.

Sure that's a medium to large size dog with an unpredictable temper.

Get him off the stage.

The nature of the dog is a result of the owner (in my opinion).

It's not the dog, it's the owner. Fairly similar, if not identical to parents with children.

What a moronic statement to make.

I'm actually terrified of my Staffie right now haha. Rescued by myself and my wife in October 2014. One month after our 14 year old Presa Canario died. Yes, a Presa. She would've licked you to death with love before biting you.

This little lady is the same.

As an owner of a "dangerous" breed i walk my dog on the lead mainly because one he's deaf and couldn't hear me call him. Two people have been brain washed into thinking all bull breed dogs are child eating monsters because of a few idiots that use them for fighting or protection dogs. Iv been bitten by jacks and westies countless times even a daushund bit me. In all my years they closest i came to being bitten by one of the dangerous dogs was a police German shepard in the uk.labs/collies/jacks account for most dog bites. All dogs have the potential to be dangerous as do most animals. It really is down to the owners of the dogs.

They are bred specifically to have certain genetic traits. Dog historically were selected for breeding that were good for fighting. The dog was designed over generations and the 'beneficial' genetic traits were developed. Modern dog breeds were all developed in this way. They are aggressive and dangerous because the most suitable for fighting were selected by breeders and bred with others who were also suitable for fighting

I say lets restrict cars/bikes/stairs/child birth/sports because more people die or are seriously injured by them than are killed or hurt by dogs every year

It's not to do with how often a dog bite, its to do with how they bite when they do.

Labs bite more people than any other dog, but 99% of the time its just one bite.

If a staff bites you, it will be more than once, it will be an attack. This is one of the reasons assholes buy these dogs, they can mistreat them and have them attack people/other dogs.

The likliehood of a well treated pet staffie attacking you is pretty much 0, same for rotweillers, ridebacks etc.

I don't think the breeds should be restricted, I think owners should be. I think the police should come over to people and ask them to call their dog back, make it sit etc, and if the person cant they should fine the person for not being in control of an animal in a public space.

I think if you have a dog that bites someone in a public place, then depending on circumstances you should probably not be allowed own a dog again, at least have a timeout put in place or maybe some sort of mandated training courses.

All I know is, its rarely a dogs fault when they bite, its usually some humans.

I've been bitten by all kinds of animals - bats, cats, birds and even a pet piranha (perhaps i shouldn't have stuck my finger in that tank!) but only one dog....my friend's westie. He bites everyone who enters the house

Aggressive dogs are often fiercely loyal and protective. It's part of the breeding and comes along with the other traits. The issues come when it believes it's owner or someone it protects is being threatened. The it can act with aggression out of its protective instinct.

I dont think anyone does the dog any favours by denying the dogs history. Pits were bred for fighting. That's why they are so people friendly so they wouldn't turn on their handlers in the pit. And that's why they have such high drives.high drive dogs are the smartest most loyal and best companions.

It can show itself in a high prey drive tho too.

I think good owners should accept the full pitbull package,their history and other not so good owners,and muzzle up in public. It's better than the English route

Think all medium sized dogs and up should be muzzled too.

My poor pooch has been attacked twice this year, he was on a lead and they weren't

first attack was a German shepherd, he savaged him, vet bill cost 400 Euro which I had to pay because the dog warden said I needed proof

the police gave the owner a warning. The second attack happened on Friday, a cocker Spaniel came over and sniffed my dogs ass, my dog barked (think he must have called him a mongrel bitch in doggy language) the Spaniel got aggressive and went for his ear. I dropped the lead because he started snarling at me and I wasn't taking a bullet for no one but the owner was oblivious. I kicked him away and finally the owner strolled over. He said he thought they were playing! My dogs ear was pumping blood and now he's wearing the come of shame and feeling very sorry for himself.

My kids have a rotti. Great dogs. I have no qualms about the kids safety. Opposite in fact she's a female and has a great bond with the kids and would die for them no doubt

I adore rottis and been around them my whole life but a high drive rotti which a lot of ppl rightly look for as a great guard dog can have high rank aggression. Any owner should know that and be aware of it. It could show itself by a rotti having 2 handlers like in a family with main handler away during day working. If the second stay at home handler isn't capable and with firm hand,after a bit of testing the boundaries the dog could make a take out the second of command in the pack,weaker handler

Not the dogs fault. And no real bad intentions on owners part either. If you buy a big dog you should research it to bits tho

And the lists are very unfair to pits anyway. If a dog attacks and looks anything like a pit it's called a pit. Often it's not

Recent horrific attack in cork was blamed on a pit mastiff mix when the dog was an Argentinian dogo

Story is still online as a pit attack but you have to really look hard to find the story of the DNA testing

Btw a dogo is a fantastic dog with legendary loyalty and as a breed standard has an unquestionable temperament. It was just an unfortunate series of events. Not the dogs fault

Totally agree blame the deed not the breed. People often think my bull terrier is s pitbull which if you know dogs is ridiculous

I have a staff/pit cross. She wouldn't attack a jelly.

I live in hope that if me or my grandkids were ever under a real threat that she would be there for us. I won't hold my breath if it happens. And we'll still adore her, as she does us
