"As I cycle I can be out for a couple of hours at a time on my own so I listen to up beat music on one headphone so i can still hear cars coming up behind me on my outside. I ride with a club on a Saturday so you can have a chat and a coffee and the hours just fly past. Though if I'm stressed a couple of hours in the mountains on my own without music listening to the wind and the thump of my own heart is great headspace. " Ditto..i always run the mountain roads, just me and some sheep for company, and and odd cyclist...love the country roads..and a great way to clear the mind | |||

"So what helps you fabbers when out running" When I go for a long run (which for me is anything over an hour running time) I try not to think of it as a long run. I break the route up into shorter stages and then check of each stage in my mind as I complete it. By focusing on the run as a series of short stages rather than one long run it "seems" to pass more quickly. I also try to enjoy my surroundings - I always run outdoors, usually on country roads or in parks/fields, so I try to take in what I see around me - that is distracting and make the time pass more quickly. Also, I have several different routes, I am not covering the same territory on each long run. And, if I have a problem I'm trying to work through (either work or personal) a long run is a great way to tease things out. I don't tend to have horny thoughts on my runs, I save them for later, though occasionally they creep in. And of course I enjoy the sight of a female bum at any time - I sometimes wonder do you realise how revealing (and, sometimes, unflattering ) Lycra) can be! But on a run I try not to stare at women runners, no matter how attractive I find them - they are just out for a run as well, so I don't think perving them for my pleasure would be very fair or correct. Anyway, for a guy, doing anything which might cause an erection is not a good idea - both embarrassing and uncomfortable, especially if you run without underwear (I do). Finally if you can find other people to run with who are at the same level of you that is a great way to pass a long run - just don't jump on any of the runners you find attractive OK, more than I intended to write. "I love the long runs. The longer the better for me. I get to clear my head and just empty everything out and it's just me my self and some music. I got a lovely ipod that takes a lot as I will be back training for an ultra when baby comes once I get the all clear and hopefully injury free this year. " Ultra..fair play. "Best thing for shin splints is rest. It could take 2 or 3 weeks. In the meantime strengthen up those calves by doing calf raises on the edge of a step. " Cheers, tried that though but started after my last marathon that prob wasn't match fit for tbh. Had plenty of rest periods since but each time back out on hard surface am crippled, fine on treadmill etc, killing me as nothing better than a run in the fresh air | |||
