A reply on a recent thread got me thinking. there are quite a few round here who wouldn't be internet or tech savvy, so I'm proposing those who are might want to chime in here and offer their expertise. From the dumbest of smartphones to the superest of computers, I'm sure there are fabbers that can cover all bases.

worried about internet privacy? about what your kids have access to? can't get your router to work? get nervous when you hand your phone over to a tech in case he finds your naughty stash?

then message a tech fabber! (tm)

I'll start.

I have experience with mac and older pc's (not into windows 8 or 10 so i wont be much help there) android smart phones, playstation 4's and other sundry devices.

Also, i think educating other fabbers on internet etiquette wouldn't go astray......

That's what Google device manager and remote wipe is for.

Or icloud if you use an iphone.

Whaddaya mean you don't know what they are?

I had to get a new screen during the week and he wanted my pin before I left the store. Told him I had confidential work stuff on the phone and that we'd check it worked when I came back to collect it! Wasn't gonna chance anyone having a sneaky peek at my phone with fab, photos and all the rest!!

Encrypt the phone when you buy it. You will loses abit of performance but i would say its worth it.

Google device wipe is same as you going into the settings and doing that. Its not secure since no encrptiong is used on the phone which mean easy recover of data.

Iphone is alot securer since the phone uses a type of encryption called AES-256 since factory. The iphone erase just wipes the access key to the data then the data can get over written with new data.

Sorry to say but the pin is really just to stop people using the phone. If they have access to a computer and cable for the phone then it realy wont take long to access anything. ps encryption needed.

You could of course use a phone with a removable memory card and keep everything on that...even if the phone breaks all you gotta do is remove it. Sony Z is da bomb.

But yes keeping on SD is a better idea.

If your image app is stored on the card too will the thumbnail still be in the phone I wonder???

And a 64gb micro SD card is what, €20? No brainer.

In theroy it shouldnt even make temp files since the origianls are in the same location (SD card). So yes move both to the SD.

Damn, my head is done in. It took me now nearly 2 hours to get my BOI online Business acc working again because I switched to windows 10. Windows 10 comes with Microsoft Edge that doesn't support java plug-ins therefore no online banking.

Anyway I got there, should someone ever have that problem.

It's ridiculous anyway that BOI only works with a sheit browser like explorer.

Using a virtual machine would be a good idea to avoid this problem. Also it would help protect your online banking transaction even if your computer is infected with banking virus / Malware.

You can set up the vm to always return to the exact same instance every time you booted it up. So its clean and shiny

no matter what you view or do on the internet

also I don't want to switch system every time I need to do online banking.

The trick was that the explorer is still in the windows 10 package, you just have to find it, pin it to the taskbar, run it as admin (ctrl + shift + right mouse click) then install java

You dont have to switch systems.

Its a imaginary / virtual computer that runs like a program on your computer.

At the moment I have 5 virtual machines running on the same computer I am writing this message on.

I just click between the windows. XP, Windows 7, 8 ,8.1 and kali

Its not just Edge... the all browsers are dropping support for java applets. Chrome dropped it back in September. Oracle are dropping applets from Java completely in the next version. The main reason is security concerns. But unlike the long and slow painful death of Flash, java applets are getting a slightly quicker send off.

Hey I came across a similar problem before also with a sony. Check the native resolution on the tv and the playstation are the same. set them at the lowest on both and increase incrementally. also try a different cable. you might need to use a diiferent tv to set the default resolution on playstation.

Bloody banksters! Had to urgently transfer 28 pounds to a UK acc today, it costs you almost more to do so than the actual amount.

I ended up transferring Euros, I transferred 2 Euro more to the receiver than the today's exchange rate to cover even a bad exchange rate but avoided the bank fee and saved a 30 euro. Fuckers! Not with me!

Yes.. There are a few on the play store.

Viruses don't generally spread as easily on phones than on PCs mainly as it's not quite as easy doe phones to discover other phones nearby and copy themselves over. Most malware and viruses on the phone are from downloading apps from suspicious sources, although it has been known for dodgy software to get added to appstores. To avoid this...

Don't install any software not from an appstore

Don't root your phone

Don't install anything emailed to you

Keep your phone updated

Use a virus checker

Finally... Phones have exploitable bugs too and are often not patched. This means you could well be vulnerable to attack and there isnt much you

can do about it other buy a new phone. Upgrade regularly.

If your iphone is up to date e.g. version 9.2.1 then no it is encryped from default and should be secure (as long apple is not involved). If it was version 9.0.1 then i would worry as there was a bypass bug that was able to access your images.

Plug everything out and wait for 30s to plug them back in and and turn on again.

More than likely the port is damaged if the tv is mounted eg.cables swinging.

Just connect via another hdmi port on the tv or last resort you go and buy a new cable

Sorry can't recommend any iPhone apps but look up reviews about wiping free space then get a app for deleting cache files.

Hope that is some help.
