"Just something I'm into! Does your child get active physical education In primary school? Be it each day from their teachers or an outside coach coming in? Reason I'm asking is I just looked at some different schools around and it's crazy how many teachers have no interest in physical activity! Ireland is becoming Huge in the numbers chart of been one of the biggest with child obesity! Is physical activity not taken seriously enough? " The main problem lies with parents, not schools. Primary school children will go outside at lunch and break times and play naturally, just as children always have. It's the sitting at home on their arses playing on devices, watching tv and eating crap that their parents buy for them that is the main cause.

"The 3 of my kids are in primary they're involved in a programme at the minute to get a Flag to show their healthy and fit. Exersize before school every day they have PE and then swimming in the curriculum too. On top of that their involved in athletics and football and never in if it's dry. I wouldn't say schools are lax at all. " Imo kids should be involved in diff physical activities as part of ongoing weekly curriculum! It's very important

"I grew up in a country where the kids walk to school and they still do up to this day, where most schools are public and on a high standard with a sports hall connected to the school, pe and swimming is a fixed part of the school curriculum. The kids are sent respectively assigned to the nearest school from their home. No crazy school traffic, no frenzy over the best school one could send their kids to, no better education for rich kids over less privileged ones, all go together to the same school. So I better not comment on this one! However I completely agree that childhood obesity starts at home and it is the parents fault, however the school certainly has a big influence on a childs education and life." I want to live in this country that you soeak of ! I don't have kids - but the idea of kids as slobs makes me angry, it's reflection of a convenience society that is totally atomized. When I was young, everyone played out together all the time. Trains your metabolism to speed up, builds muscle and bone and reflexes and teaches you to socialise. Consoles, phones and games are the rosd to bad childhood health.

" It is not the fault of teachers rather the schools policy on PE.. Hard to imagine that in Ireland many schools are more interested in religious education than the pyshical wellbeing of young children Parents must accept responsibility, children do not need fed a diet of fast and convenient foid simply to suit their lifestyle.. Forward planning and educatcating themselves on the benefits of healthy food types results in healthy children..

"The way things have changed when we were young we had to walk to school bare foot in snow drifts eight fight feet high u carried a sod of turf with u to heat the class room in ur satchel. There's lots of factors that has us climbing the polls on childhood obesity activities being one of them the way food is now processed and presented as handy to cook ready in seconds meals to the availability of fast food outlets. At the end of the day it's the responsibility of the parents to guide and educate their off spring on nutrition, exercise, right from wrong u know all the things a child needs to shape their future. Makes u wonder if the home economics classes in our secondary schools should be mandatory up to junior cert " Alot of very valid points have been made by you all. Obesity start's with the food we eat and the calories we burn! It really isn't rocket science, calories in calories out. Having said that it also comes down to education of food. Processed foods are far more prevalent in our society today than ever before. Healthy eating starts in the supermarket in what you decide to put into your trolley. Stay away from processed foods, stop and think before blindly picking something up and just throwing it in. Per capita Ireland is one of the highest consumers of confectionery's in Europe. With a healthy diet and moderate physical activity people can lead a healthy life. Our bodies are the only one's we have, why poison it with crap.!!

" Makes u wonder if the home economics classes in our secondary schools should be mandatory up to junior cert " I've often thought this. My son is in leaving cert and can cook healthy balanced meals, some of his friends have no idea how to "cook" anything that doesn't come un a box with microwave instructions

"Im kinda wondering that if us fabbers are so clued in to whats healthy and whats not for our children, then why isnt the rest of the country?and why obesity is so high?.....is it lack of information?idleness or just ignorance?Children from a disadvantaged area cant be blamed as a food budget would be place at home or is it the better off choosing to make their kids fat? Sorry Op i guess Ive more thoughts on your original thread question. " Some of the healthiest children I know come from low income familys.. People spend their money wisely, cut out fizzy dtinks and high sugar content snacks.. Many parents are able to view tv adds encouraging healthy altetnatives, yet they still feed their kids crap...

"I have always been one for sports so my kids are into judo, and football they also go swimming, so yes they are fit, but it has to be said it costs alot and as I live in the countryside, it means a lot of driving about for me and petrol money. Guess what im saying is kids from a less Affluent Back ground may not be able to afford to do this Particular If there is transport problems" Schools here run after school clubs, a small weekly fee helps cover the cost... Football, netball , gaa ect... At secondary level they get this free anyway and local clubs in all sports are free... So no excuse for lazy kids... Just lazy parents...

"Hopefully if the sugar tax is introduced this year it might help to pump funds back into playgrounds, improving schools physical education and sporting clubs. The tax for plastic bags was pumped back into improving the environment,i dont see why the sugar tax cant be pumped back into the future of our children." if fg and labour get back in they would use the suger tax to bail the banks out not schools

Id personally love to see parents charged with neglect and abuse in severly obese children but if 20% tax is taken from the fizzy drinks companies and allocated back into health for our kids,im all for it.Whatever government takes over, this problem isnt going away anytime soon.
