Most of you probley have seen the video of a protester on Facebook doing the rounds of a guard smacking him over the head with his baton. Is this getting out of control now or are the protesters asking for it personally I think it's abit extreme from a guard too use so much force on any human being crazy what do you guys think.

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

While i wouldn't call myself anti-police, from how brutal the American police have gotten (I spend far too long reading American news for some reason), I've come to believe that far too many officers join, not to serve and protect, but to give them power and an excuse to be legally violent.

Try dealing with the French cop's, them lads think nothing of kicking fuck out of ya. Yes some times the Irish cop does push it to far but the odd kick up the hole wouldn't cdo a bit of harm to some toe rags on the street. Years ago there was a cop in this part. Tight hoor, if you stepped out of line he would give ya a bit of a slap. I tell ya, was to many around stepped out of line the 2nd night they were out

that's what I'm saying in my eyes the cops have a right too ask u for your name iv bin stopped an asked for name and I complied with them fully and there was never any hassle but that was just wrong in some many levels of what the guard too that man and some people say they should be armed

NOT ONE PERSON was arrested for the resession but its ok to hit a man across the head for not giving his name. This country is corrupt to the last. the garda are scum.

I seem to remember some bankers are in jail, you also haven't seen video because the person not giving name was a different person , the Gardai are not scum either, some people there wanted trouble they got it, in other countries much worse would of happened if people push cops u got to know there will be reaction.

the video is shocking ok one guy deserved too be arrested with his attention seeking infront of his pals acting the idiot and hard man but one guy definitely did deserve a full smack across the face with a baton that was just so wrong but hey there's 2 sides too a story and the clip only last for about 2 mins I think what I'd like too know is what happened before it all kicked off

The facts of the video are.

The man was being arrested after --the garda were called to the hotel after reports of an assault.

-He failed to give his name which is an arrestable offence.

-numerous people tried to stop the arrest "peacefully" which makes them guilty of obstruction of police duty. And it was not peacefull, in any way.

I'm not saying that the garda was right to do what he done and it does look bad on camera but i know if i was surrounded by an angry mob I'd do the same to defend myself.

Many people are saying the man was elderly and shouldnt of been hit. I think if you're willing to interupt an arrest for assault you deserve the consequences.

If it was an arrest for trespassing I'd be on the protesters side. But imagine of you were assaulted, you would then want an arrest made.

People are too quick to jump on 'fuck the gardai' bandwagon. I have it on good athourity ( a former TD) that the county council were given a fund of €25 million euro to go to this auction, and buy those houses to give to families and to ease the housing problem in the area.

I wouldn't be a Garda in this country for all the money in China. I have seen the video. The rent-a-mob are a serious headache for the Gardai in Ireland. They think that they know the law;they don't. The guy who was being asked for his name was justifabily arrested. Under Irish law if a garda suspects that you have been involved in or have knowledge of an assault, they are fully entitled to ask for your details. The gardai are obliged to tell you under which section of the relevant act they are they are requesting your details. They are not obliged however to quote the actual body of text within the act. That's what the rent-a-mob were insisting on. The guy involved in this case was actually impeding a garda doing his duty; an arrestable offence. If a garda goes to arrest somebody and a third party intervenes, the Garda is within his rights to use force to effect the arrest. Bear in mind he is also allowed to use force if he feels either himself, a colleague, a member of the public or his prisoners safety and or welfare are at risk.

In a split second under the durress that garda seemed to be under he may have judged that safety of people including himself was at risk. US watching the video now, from the comfort of our armchairs might deem it to be excessive. Put yourself in that gardas boots.......

Hoess man stood on and pepper sprayed in Dublin earlier this year. Repercussions for the blue. Ottle thug? Absolutely none.

Man takes piss in Waterford. Gets beaten to a pulp. Garda thugs are jailed. Garda who is controlling cctv of the assault moves cameras away so beating can commence.

I've a few pals in the guards, I also drink with one. Some of the story's these lads would tell ya would rise the hair on the back of your neck. I wouldn't last s month as a cop, I'd bait now and ask later. Anyway, what about garda golden that was killed lately by a nut case. Maybe if he had went on kicking and punching at the but case with the gun he would still be alive. Maybe not. Put yourself in the cops shoes, your in a room that you don't want to be in, but as part of your job you must go in. Maybe while in there u eye up a few nutters that you know would think nothing oof sticking a knife in ya. Things start to get hot. You know that the room full of protesters hate you and don't want you there. The nutters are slowly starting to move in on you. Your filled with fear...what do you do? Well I know what I'll do. I'll fight for all I'm worth. Right I'm not saying what happened is right but if you were in a room and the fear of God was in you what would you do? Stand and cry for mammy and show everyone your weak? Or harden up and show them who's boss

Garda on horse says to little girl on bike, "Did Santa get you that?" "Yes," replies the little girl. "Well tell him to put a reflector light on it next year!" and fines her 5 euros. The little girl looks up at the cop and says, "Nice horse you've got there, did Santa bring you that?" The cop chuckles and replies, "He sure did!" Its not all cops fault addicts walking streets robbing, its the justice system

They arrest them and they are let back out

Addicts shouldn't be in the justice system anyway, they should get free heroin from medical board and option of rehab and no more drug addict street crime

The fact is that the guards were called to the hotel after the mob started intimate guessed and someone alleged an assault took place. From what I was told from eye witnesses there were a number of people who were intent on causing trouble and that the guard reacted to being either kicked or something like that. How true it is I do not know but one thing is for sure most of those people is that video are not local gorey people!!!!

"I think they don't use enough force, arm them to the teeth and have them fight back, there is so much scum walking the streets let the guards use force as it is they have no respect from criminal gangs the seam to think they can rob any one, and get away with it, Drug dealers selling crap on street corners allow them to have the crap knocked out of them so what if a few get killed, they no loss any way "

The gaurds do their job .. U can't just go arrest someone u need evidence then a file has to go tru the DDP

Has anyone every had a serious problem and need the gaurds??

Go tru the motions .. Well I have.. The support of the gards in surrounding stations is unreal and trust me they are working overtime.. They are on call and always checking up on the case.. Just because their hands are tied with one situation doesn't mean they aren't working behind the scenes!!

But sure there's no point trying to get that across

"the garda only serve themselfs, politions and the banks. the rest of us can go get fucked.

NOT ONE PERSON was arrested for the resession but its ok to hit a man across the head for not giving his name. This country is corrupt to the last. the garda are scum."

. It is usually best to co operate with the forces if law and order . The garda have a difficult job to do..

Lots of people were made bankrupt during the recession. Where is you information coming from?.

Just to be clear, the Gardai only have a right to ask you for details if they have "reasonable suspicion" that you have committed a crime. They have absolutely no right to ask you when you're just going about your business, or even standing at a protest. I dunno what this chap was doing, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was just being loud and a bit annoying - there's no law against that. Refusing to give details and obstruction are excuses the filth us all the time for when they arrest people for no reason, or when they batter people and then go "oh fuck, I better figure out an explanation for this".

A young man in this twenties died last night in garda custody in Dublin airport.

With the video thing too it's going to be a really bad week ahead PR wise for them and questions in the dail no doubt.

Because they want to maintain their personal privacy? Because they might not want a member of a violent and well-organised gang of thugs to know anything about them?

. I fail to understand why anyone would give their name to an organised gang of thugs , what my comment said was that you should co operate with the police or garda , in any event your privacy is irrelevant . Surely we should all be helping the forces of law and order to stop and prevent crime.
