So I do training for rugby twice a week for about 2hours full of fitness .. A mate of mine suggested having a protein shake before and after I do .. my worry is are they safe enough? And for anyone who works out is this a good idea??

My son is big into the rugby, plays every weekend.

He swears by the protein drinks before and after training, says it keeps his 'levels' up

After..before and during go for electrolyte drinks....after yeah..they help defo...but ya still need complex mix of carbs and protein within an hour and a half so maybe half a shake..then make sure you eat something suitable

yeah they are good if you are training for that length and you want to begin the muscle repairing process quickly.

like ashNdave said, look for a brand that has the lowest level sugar and the highest level of protein

the neutral falvour is great (no flavour therefore not artifical sweeteners) they have great prices and product.

check out 'bulkpowders.ie' they have great prices and product.

search for 'Pure Whey Isolate™ 90'

Perfectly safe. I have one for breakfast everyday. Pretty much 1 scup is = to a chicken fillet.

I use a high amino acid product called "Revive Active" before sports. Fantastic for recovery, great for hangover too. Oh and excellent for sexual performance Up all night!!!

I think it's Irish too...

Do you really need to go down the road of protein shakes?

Are you working out at a high enough level that you warrant taking them instead of eating something small before or after training.

Some milk might be enough. A handful of nuts or seeds, fruit. Or shove it all in a blender and make a smoothie/shake. The benefit of going this whole food approach is you get all the extra vitamins and minerals in real food that protein shakes wouldn't contain.

I'm not saying don't take them, I lift heavy weights every day and take 2 protein shakes a day, I'm saying take a moment and analyse what you're eating first and make any changes and tweaks required and you may find you don't need them.

If you do decide you need supplemental protein I would echo the shout out for Bulk Powders. I would try and buy powder if possible rather than ready made. Some of the ready made shakes can be packed with sugar and other additives.

Whey protein gets adsorbed into your body quickly while the protein blends adsorb over a slower period of time. I use a blend as it makes me feel fuller for longer. I use Bulk Powders Complete Protein Blend.

Someone mentioned electrolyte drinks. The science behind these are debatable at best and at worst outright fraud. Tap water is more than fine, keep well hydrated during exercise. A well balanced diet will replace anything you lose during exercise.

Hope this helps. Any questions ask away.

Protein is completly safe, any protein your body doesnt use is usually excreted anyway, only take protein after your training, use carbohydrates during but only if ur not getting enough carbs from ur food, protein will just help your muscles recover, you just wont be as sorr in the morning

I take a scoop of kinetica whey protein within 20 mins of finishing a workout. I sometimes make a meal replacement shake with protein powder, avocado, banana, a scoop of oats, peanut butter and almond milk - sometimes you just dont feel like eating not long after exercise or just dont have time. Its a totally balanced meal you can consume fast.

Thats probably the best advice if you can get food into you its better then any protein

A good way of finding out what works for you is to get the High5 Marathon Pack on Amazon, its a mixed box, you get a couple of everything

Meath

that marathon pack is all gels for runners or cyclists.

if youre doing a 1 or 2 hour class you dont need that kinda stuff. plenty of water during training and protein within half an hour after. i do drink a protein, made on water straight after my training, especially on lifting days. I'd also make sure to eat within an hour of finishing.

Protein will only do you good so go for it, just be careful what flavour you guy.. some are disgusting!

I don't do sports but long gym sessions and have a nephew who is a personal trainer . His advice to me was using a meal replacement shake like slim fast etc instead of a protein drink would be better for a woman

You need about 25g of protein after working out and about 50g carbs with it if it's intense.

Something like Avonmore protein milk is perfect. 25g of protein in 500ml

Protein shakes are generally rank....if you've any taste...and full of sweeteners and artificial flavours.

So in summary better than KFC but real food is best.
