I heard on a radio talk show that people were asked would they take refugees to live in their home.

I wouldn't.

I don't know if they are a murderer or paedophile.

We know they are coming here but I won't chance it.

Would any of you?

Id rather see the homeless familys housed before then as charity starts at home and then look after anybody else that needs help

Im not a racist either. Never have been.

I have no problem helping people out but this is the beginning of something massive and really can't see a happy ending at all with this.

People are starting to be afraid of what this will do to our country.

Overcrowding and yes who is paying the bills for all of this?

I have no problem with it. Refugees will be processed before being allowed into the country so they'll be genuine enough. We have a moral obligation to help people who are persecuted and have to leave their homes as a result. Remember these aren't economic migrants just coming here for a better life, they are refugees seeking asylum and protection from murder, torture etc

But the way, as regards paying, once they're granted asylum they are free to work. The problems that usually occur with the asylum process in this country are caused by the long delays in making a decision. Until they're granted asylum they cannot work and so cost money to look after.

The asylum process doesn't cause the long delays. It's the loopholes that haven't been closed off. If someone is refused asylum the can appeal a negative decision over and over again. Which can cost the State millions for one case alone. People aren't left abandoned in Mosney or wherever. They are entitled to stay while their case is ongoing appeal after appeal after appeal. Which btw can take years

No I wouldn't but then I'm not a very nice person. If we look at it the other way round. Should we house the refugees with ordinary householders? Some of them may have very questionable sexual practices!

You're perfectly right. The correct thing to do is throw them all back into the sea, good and bad, that way isis won't overrun us all by the weekend.

.

If you wish to stop labelling me as gullible because I have a more moderate opinion to you and want to have a reasoned debate, I'm happy to go along with that. Otherwise go away and shout on a bucket or something. I'm really not interested in squabbling like kids in a schoolyard. Goodnight.

You call it a more moderate opinion, I'd say a lack of reality and common sense. Why should I go away? Isnt this a place for airing opinions, just as you have yours. If you cant hack yours being questioned maybe its you that belongs in the school yard. Night Micheal

Never mentioned guillable at all. I just pointed out flaws in system. Something that is never pointed the reason why people are living in asylum accomodation for so long.

Its a bit pathetic stating my attitude is throw them back into sea. There has to be a long term solution to a long term problem. So far this year over 330,000 have crossed into Europe. Nearly 3000 souls lost. Something has to be done before more lives are lost. Realising that they are going to be looked after in Europe will encourage a lot more to make that trip across the med. Greedier people willing to take them, and more chances for more lives lost

should we take refugee's :

Yes for our own humanity, and we should do so in the full knowledge of the potential disaster it could be , be do it anyway.

we don't take them in from a position of weakness or being blinded by emotion , we take them in because it's the right thing to do to help other human beings.

Others have thrown in the homeless crisis to the debate, that too is very wrong , but I think it's somewhat disingenuous to be put forward when there haven't been the same reaction to it before the refugee crisis hit home .

No altho its a nice gesture I dont think the country is able to support a massive influx of refugees at the moment,What made me laugh is when the Catholic church made a big cry out to help these people out all the pope has to do is sell a few paintings and chalices and donate the funds which would earn millions but nope wont happen.

McCarthy is right and missy is reacting the way many people do, it's a huge long-term problem but at the end of the day as human beings they deserve our help and if your conscience says u don't need to be involved fair enough but I,m glad mine reminds me daily I'm lucky. I'm a working class person who can sustain My family, if I can offer or give something to someone else I do.

And just a wee thot, we have lived with terrorism for decades, sexual predators preaching the Bible and we manage to get on?????

Well, i for one would welcome the refugees but i would also ask the government to do more than pay lip service to the plight of thousands of its citizen's, who through no fault of their own are living lives of quiet desperation behind closed doors while the politicans fall over one and other to garner media kudos for the latest human tragedy in a desperate attempt to get votes

The picture of toddler Allan Kurdi washed up on a beach is something that stirred the conscience of everyone that saw it. A realisation of what people are enduring to reach the safety of Europe. That picture was only showed one human being on a beach, there were more bodies of men women and children taken from the water that day.

if opening our homes to these refugees was a solution to this problem it would be a welcome solution. But it's not, it's a very short term solution. It's helping a few people out of millions. Over 330,000 have reached the safety of Europe to date, figures predicted for this time next year will put that figure at approx 1 million. Regardless whether ireland can or can't cope with how many we offer asylum to now. Europe in general won't be able to cope with over half a million more by next year and another million more the following year.

The homeless here in ireland need looking after first, only up the road from me there are 3 tents in a field with 3 young family's living in them they can't get rent allowance accommodation as there are none to be had anywhere.landlords don't want tenants on rent allowance anymore due to governments new legislations in this day and age it's barbaric that family's with young children must resort to living the last 3mths in tents as they can't get anywhere to live both in the rent allowance price bracket they are allowed with social welfare and due to no landlord accepting it these people are heading towards winter in tents with little children as much as I very much sympathise with the refugees plight I do feel the government should look after there own people first it amazes me how they can take the refugees in and house them yet can't do it for there own irish people

The mind boggles!!!

Are you implying that refugees are responsible for an increase in rape crime?

Maybe you should do some further research and you will find that the high rate has a lot to do with the definition of rape under the Swedish legislation, that they record each assault as a separate case and they have improved the handling of rape cases hence the comparison of rape statistics of European countries are very difficult.

Whilst awaiting asylum they are housed and fed and also recieve a weekly allowance of €19.10 per adult and €9.60 per child plus a medical card. They also are allowed a special needs payment. (Which is basicaly an open checkbook as they all claim for clothes hair cuts etc.)

To seek asylum you must do so in the first country you arrive in. So why do these wait till they get to richer european countries??

How many asylum seekers from syria do romania or bulgaria get??

How many countries do they pass thru on route to europe that isnt at war?? Loads. They know the gravy train is europe.

Close the doors i say.

I have a first cousin who married a Syrian doctor about 8 years ago while the country was still pretty stable. When things took a turn for the worse he managed to take his family out and bring them to the south of France where they lived and work. Two years ago he traveled back to Syria to work as a doctor simply to help his people.

I have seen photos he has taken and spoken to him twice this year on Skype and let me tell you if you heard some of the stories he has told you might put bigotry and racism aside. To say I'm no racist but.... a cop out. Say it like it is.

It doesn't matter where the Irish went over the last two centuries. England/America, it means absolutely nothing to these people. I dint want criminal elements from any nation in Ireland but we took in Polish, Lithuanias and many other eastern Europeans with little or no fuss. I'm actually sickened by some of theach statements I have seen over the past few weeks. Irish, the land of a thousand welcomes, well if you are white and have a few quid

Not against companies like irish ferries...

Not in the fight for women to have autonomy over there own bodies..

Not for the fight for gay rights..

Not against the cuts against the elderly..

Not against the cuts against loan parents..

Omg I have just seen two video links that others may have seen today

1 was the Hungarian police handing out bottled water and food parcels and because it had the Red Cross on them and they are Muslim they threw them back at the police and onto the tracks

2 was them causing mayhem in Greece ... The Greeks living terrified because of the amount of refugees that has been allowed into their country

It's fucking disgusting ... Yes genuine asylum seekers need help but to treat the hand that may save their lives is disgusting ... They need to learn respect and be grateful that Europeans are willing to help them instead of throwing it back in our faces when there are so many people in our own country and others who have nothing and no one is offering them hand outs

As for other comments made above yes I agree there's is the possibility that a lot of these males are members of Isis and we have just welcomed them in after they forced their way .... In my opinion while there are genuine asylum seekers amongst them we have also just allowed Isis, it's followers and war into Europe....

That is the big problem right there. How on earth does one tell the genuine from the criminals or terrorists. Our borders and people have been kept relatively safe until now because we have been able to stem the flow. Simple put until someone wipes out Assad and his fellow so called leaders this will continue. What even worse us the only people fighting Assad with any great success are the IS group because European governments failed to do so when they had they chance because they didn't want to go toe to toe with Russia.

I didn't realize that IS was supported by Russia. Surprising considering the links between IS and the Chechen terrorists.

I was aware of the Russian support for the Assad regime.

Why do you consider stability will only come with IS destruction of that Assad regime. Do you not consider Assad could provide it?

What ever happened to charity begins at home , as _ompus77 said , why are no Arab countries taking any of them . Isis stated they would get into Europe. There's loads of strapping young men among the refugees, who's to say none of them are members of it and how the hell are they ever gonna process them all. Where are they gonna get housing , jobs ? Will be us taxpayers footing the bill ..

Arab countries, in particular Lebanon and Jordan, have taken millions of Syrian refugees. There is a chance/probability that there are potential terrorists in the mass of refugees. There is more chance of potential terrorists slipping into the country unnoticed as tourists than as highly viable asylum seekers. Cameron was pursuing a very sensible policy of funding refugees in Lebanon and Turkey but has caved into public pressure and is accepting a pinprick of people.

I agree it's pointless and undesirable for UK and Ireland to take bodies rather than providing financial aid. Sadly one picture last week has a greater pull on votes and the refugees lose out in the end as the government will reduce the financial aid package.

Having come from a position two weeks ago where I would have agreed build the razor wire fences and keep them out today I believe yes we need to do something to help these people on a humanatiarn level. Let's look first at the term refrugee someone displaced trough war or act of god seeking safe haven there for the first country they reach which can provide this should de their destination. Once they then leave this safe haven looking for a better lifestyle they then become migrants because the have made an economic decision to travel on in search of work.

Not forgetting some of these people have walked sometimes up to three months to arrive here some have paid human traffickers to load them on to boats to an almost definite doom its my thinking that reception centers be set up to receive these Refugees close to the countries of origin where they can be cared for and treated for any medical needs, also housed till its deemed safe to return home. We can talk all night about the Irish and how they have spread all over the world in search of work, yes we did under the visa regimes of those country's we went to.

There is a humanitarian need to be addressed and we need play our part but for the future security of the eourpean union we also need to protect our borders the open door system prevailing has to be closed and entry through the normal channels resumed the sooner the idots at the helm relise this and take appropriate action the sooner these unfortunate people realise we are not a soft touch as it appears at the moment walking through safe countries

This can't be linked to the plight of homless in Ireland that is the total responsibility of the government to find first off temporary housing moving swiftly to more permanent housing this not new to Ireland since the foundation of the state successive governments have failed in this regard

"But the way, as regards paying, once they're granted asylum they are free to work. The problems that usually occur with the asylum process in this country are caused by the long delays in making a decision. Until they're granted asylum they cannot work and so cost money to look after.

Are you really that gullible??

How do you know they are genuine, the majority of men could be isis soldiers, they threatened they would do this a few yrs ago.

How do you know your next door neighbour isn't a member of isis? This will be the closest scrutinised group of asylum seekers in the history of the UN. Was your neighbour ever checked out? Why are isis coming to Ireland?

Isn't Ireland part of the west? Remind me who Isis are targeting? You really are that gullible

also all European counbtries are panicking, do you really think they have the time and resources to check these people out throughly "

. And in addition , how carefully do we monitor them once they are in the country . I would have no confidence in the vetting process . How do we know how many are turned away and the reasons for doing so?.

You can call it protecting our country of you like but it's also ignoring the plight of thousands of people who are fleeing for their lives from a situation brought about in part by western European governments and their financing the "Arab Spring".

The number of refugees we're talking about here is less than the numbers of asylum seekers we've had from other countries in the past. Were we overrun with problems from them I don't recall any major increase in crime levels apart from some people claiming that certain nationalities were prone to various criminal activities etc.

Out of curiosity, and given that I accept that isis are obviously coming here can someone tell me what is the threat from isis against Ireland? Why are they coming here? Are they jealous of our weather? Actually don't bother answering that. I'll just let my imagination run riot and probably come up with your answer anyway

I'll just let my imagination run riot and probably come up with your answer anyway "

As you ask me to stop calling you gullible I'll just put it down to you being naive. Maybe one day you might be affect by the threat of is is and you opinions won't be so moderate but then I forgot your sitting in your little bubble in Ireland and that won't happen

What I learned here on this thread is that all those refugees who have lost everything, who have been traumatised by the horrific war that destroys their home country for years now, who walked hundreds of miles, who have risked their lives and the lives of their loved ones in overcrowded vessels not fit for the journey or in the back of lorries perched in like cattle just to reach a safe-ish shore not knowing what the future holds for them, are actually all Isis members who have been sent out to the West especially to Ireland to throw kebabs at us, rape our woman and children and to blow up our precious buses. Seriously???

May God protect us from the ignorant, in ša? Allah!

Btw be aware of the sleepers on here folks, they might not be as explosive to meet as you might think!

This is part of my fear And its based on a "little " bit of knowledge!

Already we have refugees throwing away help packs because they have a red cross logo on them, in essence refusing our help based on religious beliefs!! That is a statement of intent in my eyes!

why are we so PC that our rules have to adjust in our country??

We already have new rules where teachers and staff in schools are not allowed wear crucifix necklaces because it is classed as disrespectful yet the muslim religious requirements must be respected i.e praying x amount of times a day & clothing rules such as burka etc . Why isn't it "Our country our rules !"

Because when in their respective countries we have to respect there laws females covering up etc?? "Their country their rules"

I am just to confused and perhaps too Irish and set in my ways that I fear for us being abused .

I worry about the future when we have communities that want to enforce Shari'ah law.

I have started to read up on all of the above and it is vast and frightening the Qur'an is interpreted in so many different ways to suit such extreme views (like the bible I agree) that in my opinion we really need to take a hard look b4 we jump in.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing !!

Still wondering why all Christians countries, people HAVE to respect Muslim religion..but they DON'T respect them back?!?!

Im not religious and never was.. but I respect any religion until they leave me alone. I do respect country & rules where I live! And though anyone should.. cause if you not like something why than go there..

Sorry if I bothered someone with my comment..but everyone are welcome say what they think..!

And OP.. No, I would never, cause never can know what you let in in your house...

Also reported on the news this week was the fact that Ireland has a massive amount of empty houses - lots of them are holiday homes out West. There are also c 40,000 units free in greater Dublin alone.

It's absolute bs that we cannot afford to house people - be they homeless Irish or homeless immigrants.

There's no political will to create a viable social housing situation in Ireland. Why ? Because it's bad for business. 27% of current TD's are landlords also. Why would they want to rock the boat ?

Ireland is a rich country and could easily afford 4,000 immigrants. If you don't like the sound of that, you won't like the future. Because of Western-supplied military intervention in Middle East resource wars snd climate change, we are only going to see more immigrants - not less. Get used to it !

Ireland is a rich country and could easily afford 4,000 immigrants. If you don't like the sound of that, you won't like the future. Because of Western-supplied military intervention in Middle East resource wars snd climate change, we are only going to see more immigrants - not less. Get used to it !

Yea I'd say your mad for the refugees to be let in...you be the first person to greet them at the docks with open arms tryin to find yourself a wife. All the fellers start screaming Allah Akbar in yer face and fireing kebabs at you, and not the wrapd up kebab like a tortilla like a kebab skewar. Chunks of meat and peppers on the stick them throwing them like javilins at you the lil pointy bit hitting you...you be happy then?

Wasn't there a yarn in the Bible about the good samaritan. I can't remember how it ended but I'm presuming it involved the throwing of pointy bits of kebabs and the shouting of Allah Akbar in his face? It's also moderately amusing how many devout Christians we have now yet I always got the impression in the past that most people here laughed at the idea of religion Mind you, maybe the one about the good samaritan isn't part of Christian teaching anymore?

When I was a kid growing up in Dublin in the early 70s we had lots of 'refugees' from the 6 counties come to live in Dublin. Were they IRA/UDA cells or decent people trying to get away from the shit and mayhem ?

Not against homelessness..

Not when the imf rolled in..

Not against jobs bridge. .

Not against proposed cuts to minimum wage..

Not against education cuts..

Not against waiting times an the lack of hospital beds..

Not against companies like irish ferries...

Not in the fight for women to have autonomy over there own bodies..

Not for the fight for gay rights..

Not against the cuts against the elderly..

Not against the cuts against loan parents..

But all of a sudden people have developed a social conscious..

Strange that.. "

Yep, agreed. Very easy for newspapers and facist politicians to convince some people that all of their troubles are because of an immigrant threat.

What situation are we in now ? It's not a Muslim invasion ! The only reason we have immigrants coming to Europe ( and they are not even NEAR Ireland yet !!) is because Western countries install puppet dictators ( like Gadaffi in Libya and Assad in Syria) and use them to their own ends until they want another regime change.

Gaddaffi was singled out by the CIA as being the figure most appropriate to support when he was an army general. He was built up to what he became in order to take the Iranians down a peg or two in the same way that they built up Bin Laden in Afghanistan to fuck up the Russians. Assad.. Educated in England and much loved by the British and American governments despite his numerous war crimes.

It's the presumption all the refugees are muslim. There are Christians fleeing the countries for fear of persecution

Oh no! Christian isis sleepers. Now that's clever. Well played isis, well played! "

To quote the words of Charles Crandal Finster III "We're doomed! Doomed!DOOMED, I TELL YA!!!!"

I have no problem helping people out but this is the beginning of something massive and really can't see a happy ending at all with this.

People are starting to be afraid of what this will do to our country.

Overcrowding and yes who is paying the bills for all of this? "

"'Spankadelic' hides sadam huesain in his shed so the Americans couldn't get him. Equal rights for all!!! Nobody is a threat in spankadelics eyes "

I realise that I'm gonna have to cut through a forest of ignorance a mile thick here - but I'll put it in terms that any moron could understand.

His name is spelt "Saddam Hussein", actually.

Obviously, silly things like reading and details don't bother you. But you could try cutting and pasting sometime when your mommy lets you use the computer again.

Defenceless, exploited, bombed, brutalized and severely weakened people aren't a threat, no.

Either are Muslims.

Racists and xenophobes are, though.

Have you ever considered that equal rights for all might be a good idea ?

(No. I didn't think so.)
