"the only problem with rescue dogs is the ones that need their forever home most badly are the ones that people over look most of the time these are the bull breed dogs or the older dogs. everyone seems to want a puppy but let's be honest puppies always get a home where as if you pick an older dog or bull breed the love they will show you for getting them off death row is unrivalled." I totally agree!

"Are thoroughbred dogs not acceptable any more? I ask because the OP didn't say if he was thinking of a particular dog or just A dog. Do rescue centres have specialist breeds?" sometimes they do I got my previous bull terrier (spud) from a rescue centre

"Are thoroughbred dogs not acceptable any more? I ask because the OP didn't say if he was thinking of a particular dog or just A dog. Do rescue centres have specialist breeds?" i know there are rescue centres devoted to greyhounds so I'd assume there are for other breeds - but perhaps not so much the 'cute and cuddly' ones such as spaniels, labs or retrievers? I don't know, I'm guessing lol.

Rescue centres have all sorts of breeds and it's not that thoroughbred dogs are unacceptable it's that breeding dogs in general is so unnecessary when there are so any many perfectly good dogs in need of a home.

" Where I used to walk the greyhounds voluntarily at a rescue centre, they had other types of dogs too, labradors, mongrels, spanials, alsations etc so it is worth going to a rescue centre and see for yourself!!

That's fair enough if it's any dog you want but if I was getting a dog I think I would prefer a puppy from a reputable breeder.

" Oh Yes but I have yet to see a Weimaraner pup. Just to clarify: I think rescue centres for animals are fantastic, every cat I have ever cared for was either a stray or a rescue but for me, if I had time to look after a dog I would want a puppy and most likely a purebred.

Well I guess then my only advice would be to do a lot of research on potential seller's and to perhaps research genetic disorders as purebred dogs are supposedly more prone to them and it's better to be aware of them

A lot of purebreds do suffer from genetic flaws but good vets are usually aware of these and will check for symptoms at every check up. The Irish Kennel Club has a list of reputable breeders who I would then check out independently.

"Unless you know what you are doing, don't adopt or go to a shelter. The reason those dogs end up in them places is because people don't pick the right dog to begin with. Be honest and list out everything about yourself. If you run, if you dont, big house, big garden, no garden. What kind of personality are you, strong, protective, a leader, a follower. What do you want out of the dog, a pet, a guard, a protector? When you have all that written out go looking through dogbreedinfo and look for a dog that matches what you need, not what you want. If you want a guard dog dont get a bull type dog. If you wont run dont get an active dog, if you're stubborn dont get a stubborn breed. Once you figure out what type of dog will fit you best go for that dog alone and dont get any other type. There is nothing wrong with going to a breeder who is reputible to get a dog that will be your lifelong friend. Don't go to donedeal. If you happen across a dog that matches you in a shelter, then try get one that is young, the reason for this is you can cure a puppy of problems easier than an older dog, older dogs are more work. Dogs live a long time, dont just rescue you one because you feel sorry for it and spend the next 10 years arguing with it because its lively and you are not etc. Also, if you are picking from pups, pick well balanced pup, dont pick the cute active one running around unless you can handle dogs easy, leave that one to someone who can handle dogs, you take the easy one. That way you wont be giving it up in a year cause you cant train it. anyway, good luck." I have to disagree with you when you say that dogs end up in shelters for a reason, while yes some have behavioural problems and other may have been abused which could result in such issues but many end up in shelters for other reasons such as not looking to matching the dogs needs with your own lifestyle like you mentioned or simply because people buy dogs as gifts for people who may not actually want them or have the time to take care of them.

"I tried several times to take a dog from the local shelter but was told no as I work full time so ended up having to go get a pure bred puppy. Luckily my cousins bitch had just had a litter so I knew there was no breeding farms etc involved. I think shelters sometimes have to have some sense. I qualified as a veterinary nurse after I left school, I know how to care for animals. My dog is the centre of my life. I may work full time but I know how to love and take care of him. " Obviously you had someone who could take care of the pup while you were out all day Lae...

When I went back to work he was about 8 months and at that stage he'd been left on his own for 2/3 hours somedays and was used to his own company. My first week back to work he ate a sky remote but didn't do any other damage. I'd come home and he'd be flat out snoring on the sofa.

He probably ate it because of the frustration of trying to take a pic with it using paws...
