This is heartbreaking... Was talking to a pal last night and his son was supposed to be in the group but didn't travel..

For those of us with kids who travel like this a really sobering time .

Nobody is supposed to bury their child ... As said above there are no words

Shockingly sad stuff RIP

This should be something we look into herehow secure are the balconies on apartments. We couldn't even enforce fire regs here.be typical if most balconies are clinging on

I can't get this tragedy out of my head, it's just heartbreaking. My thoughts are with all the families who have had their hearts ripped apart by this news.

Also, we should think of all the young students in that area, their grief must be unbearable. Thank god Irish communities abroad are extremely supportive.

we stayed in apt two weeks ago with our boys and when give a 3rd floor room we insisted a ground floor instead, cant be too safe, although those student didn't do anything wrong it was the structure but in sure that doesn't help the family's atm.

It wouldn't be very common to have balconys constructed out of timber in Ireland, concrete or in some cases steel would be more normal. Even with that said I've been at parties here and not gone onto balconys when there is a big crowd already out there..

It's only 8 years since that place was finished. The timber shouldn't be rotten in such a short time. We've had balcony collapses here as well but I don't think we've built balconies the way that one was built in the last twenty years, let alone the last eight. What a horrific catastrophe.

I dont post usually in these type threads but thought it was worth saying..if anyone can offer more than just emotional support and sympathy then a very efficient discrete and excellent charity called the Kevin Bell repatriation fund will currently be working away in the background trying to make the grieving process for these families as easy as possible helping to cut through the red tape for these families to get their loved ones home...im sure donations from all walks of life would be greatly appreciated at this time...

As the saying goes .... The good die young ... Such a tragedy that in hind sight will probably be found preventable, we do not have to look to far from our own construction industry.

i think will definitely make alot of people think on balconys but i think there was a fault with the structure unfortunately.

Balconies here are usually made of steel and bolted to the wall. But who regulates and checks what type of bolts are used?

It was left to the trustworthy builders

Just heard today that a work colleague's son was at the party .when he phoned her yesterday she said all she could hear in the background was sirens and people screaming. He wasn't injured but must be in shock. Mrs J.

An awful tragedy. So so sad.

-

The balcony was poor designed and under strength. Not fit for purpose. 60 lb per Sq foot. It should been designed to 200lb per Sq ft as a minimum. They never stood a chance with 12 of them out there.

-

I usually don't get upset about these events but this one really hit me.

Didn't the company that built the place already get sued for violating building codes a few years ago too?
