I'm so paranoid about this.I have one in every room in the house now because of an incident that occurred one night a couple of years ago in my home.we were all watching a movie and had the stove open.we all got really sleepy without even realising it.with that the alarm went off.well....I hopped up as quick as and opened all the windows and doors. It was frightning.after that I put one in every room and every hall and landings.

Its sooooo lucky you had an alarm at the time..or to be honest ud prob all be dead... that's not to shock you.. but its just the facts.

And ur right... its better to put more than one alarm in ur house.

MissCC... just to let you know..there's 2 things you did wrong that night..

1st... never ever leave ur stove door open.. carbon monoxide will leak into the room. It should be closed at all times.

2nd there's only one thing to do if ur alarm goes off.. Get Out of the house... if the levels had been higher opening the windows would of had no effect to the levels you were breathing in.

But I'm sooo glad you n your family are ok..

Check your alarms every week.. make sure they still work

Coz the levels were low....obviously high enough to set off the alarm tho

I know its what the short adds are saying..open the windows..but its wrong.

At high enough levels..one breath of C.O can kill instantly.

So by staying in the house..even with windows n doors open...without knowing the exact level in the room/house..ur still being poisoned and you could of still died at high levels.

Opening the windows doesn't suddenly clear the C.O.. it takes time depending on the saturation levels in the air.

Always get out first. Stay out while the alarms are sounding..and never turn off a C.O alarm

I'm glad you don't open the stove door anymore

No...your stove is nothing like an open fire... the stove is designed to work with the doors closed.. by leaving the door open ur effecting the way ur stove works..instead of the C.O going up the flu it will find the biggest exit..the open door.

Do get alarms today... but one is not enough

Also high enough to make you all sleepy... levels that would of eventually killed.

The alarms will go off at low levels but also at extremely high life threatening levels...you won't know which.. so out of the house is the only safe place to be

It depends...

If ur actually in the room where the alarm goes off..this is where the highest levels are, don't waste time opening windows..head straight out..you can open other windows on the way out and also leave the front door open..

The problem is. Most people think opening the door/windows is all you have to do..and they stay in the house..not good.

Think of a C.O alarm as a fire alarm.. we wouldn't try and fight the fire..we just get out.. if ur outside ur safe that's the best message to give to people.

CO Levels are measured in parts per million and alarms are set to go off at roughly 10 parts per million which is quite low. You may have a headache, flu like symptoms at these levels but nothing more so you should have plenty of time to get out of the house and open windows when the alarm goes off. Be sure to buy a decent, closed case alarm such as a Fireangel or Kidde make. 7 year one is fine. These are self testing and no need to test them like a smoke alarm. CO alarms are great as a back up but be sure to have appliances checked at least once a year and serviced! Oil boilers esp need serviced once a year and open flue furies need cleaned?

Sorry silk some of your information is incorrect... CO alarms go off between 50 and 100ppm over an 8hour period...this is relatively safe and is not life threatening... but they also go off instantly at high levels...you won't know from the alarm if its low or high... to say you have plenty of time to leave the house and open windows is incorrect... get out immediately is the safest course of action

Yes it does. CO levels can rise where ever fossil fuels are burned I.e. Wood, gas, coal or oil. Leave a window open slightly in this case.

Silk is right...if you don't have a vent in that room... a window open slightly is needed... its the same for any fuel burning appliance. Get the alarms... would be the best Xmas present you could give yourselves

"No, I don't have one, or fire alarm and I blocked the vents in the rooms to make them warmer."

All very bad things to do... a lot of people block their vents.

Ur fireplace/ stove will use up the oxygen in the room to feed the flames of the fire.. without the vents you end up with a lack of oxygen... causing more C.O to be produced.. this will also cause back crafting..pushing the gases back into the room.

Best thing..unblock ur vents and get alarms
