Irish stew has lamb pieces in it..we can't afford lamb up here so we use mince steak and the spuds soak up the gravy!!

My apologies too op lol.

You can make stew with either mince or steak pieces, just a preference.

As for not using gravy, don't add much water, use an oxo cube or two when browning the mince and the juice from the mince makes a nice natural gravy (I won't lie I do more often add gravy now, I'm getting lazy)if you need to thicken it up grate a potato in while boiling the mix

I know, I have had this convo with tonnes of people, apparently my mam is the only one who puts sausages in the stew, but I think stew is brown and coddle is kinda clear? (I'm up for correction on that) so my mams is brown so I think she makes stew and just pops the sausages in! She just boils them in the strew so they are very pale in colour but really tasty

We don't call that stew down here. That's just fried mince'n gravy.

Stew is in a big pot with pieces of meat, veg and spuds in stock and let stew for hours. The longer the better so the meat becomes tender. Tastes even better the next day heated up.

Winter is the worst, I agree. nothing sexy about winter, bar a fireplace and a warm blankets and what could happen under them.

The only good things about winters are that they end each year and that it is a good time to start planning next summer holidays.

Stewing is the form of cooking, you can put what you like in it, putting gravy in "stew" is a Scottish thing that made its way over here in medieval times where add animal fats and egg yokes were used to thicken foods
