Hey was just chatting to this girl on here a few hours ago.

Just not sure

Well we chatting away as u do and we both decided we wanted to meet

this girl asked me would I go halfs on a hotel I said of course I actual even asked did she want me to pay the whole thing me being a gentleman

Anyway she insisted on paying half

So she said she was going to book the hotel in cork city and that she wanted me to pay half straight through PayPal

I then said I would pay here on Sunday when I saw her and I explain to her that I wasn't these guys that would stand her up and I was going to be in cork city for the weekend anyway

And that I would pay her in cash

So she asked again nicely in fairness and could I not use PayPal and I

explained to her again I cudnt pay her through PayPal

So she didn't reply

I sent another message then asking was she ok?

And what a surprise she blocked me

Did I do the wrong thing or say the wrong thing

Or am I being paranoid ???

Was she trying to rip me off like she I'd new to the site with no verifications

Won't comment on her tactics but I guess you had a lucky escape. Don't dwell on it and move on.

I can see both points of view..

You didn't wanted to get shafted (excuse the pun) paying someone half for the hotel and then them just taking the cash....

Maybe she didn't want to or could not.afford the hotel and didn't want to be left footing the whole bill if you didn't show up?

Seems like there is a gap in the market for a SwingPal type of system

Don't worry, man. That sounds dodgy and if she can't see that, her loss. PayPal, Western Union etc. are known for being breeding grounds for scams. It was perfectly reasonable of you to offer to pay on Sunday. Obviously I can't really comment without knowing who she was, but it sounds like you dodged a scam.

"PayPal well known for scams? When did that happen? "

The fact the transfer is instant scammers can move cash elsewhere before you realise what you are purchasing or agreeing to is a scam...

Not as bad when using it through something like ebay but sending it randomly to an email address is open to scams big time.

"she wanted me to pay it to her I say "

ahhh no way! !! That is definitely dodgy hun!!

No one would do that if they were genuine...definitely a lucky escape and explains the blocking. .. Maybe you should pass the details on to fab..I wonder how many may have been caught out? !

ya I wasn't gonna pay it without seeing her first but still just put it up here just in the hope that someone might actual get caught

I am not mentioning any names in the case that she was genuine

like it could of easily back fired on her if I didn't show up

she may of been trying to be safe too

"PayPal well known for scams? When did that happen? "

You're sending money instantly with an email address as the only ID. What's not dodgy about that?

So you were prepared to pay the full amount, but when she looked for half the amount it must've been a scam? Maybe she had the lucky escape?

"What makes it a scam? "

PayPal isn't a scam. I never said that. But it easily facilitates scams, just like Western Union (if not worse).

OP was asked to send money with only an email address and a profile here as ID. Once that money's set there's no hope of getting it back. Obviously we can only guess the intentions of the girl, but it could very easily turn into a scam.

If it was a.scam and he paid the full amount then the scammer would get nothing from it?

If he sends the scammer half the cash they get half the cash?

It does sound a bit dodgy but her intentions could have been sincere. Possibly it was a cheap room that required prepayment. However you will never know as she has now blocked you. Personally I wouldn't have done it that way but everyone is slightly different

sounds like you got a very lucky escape

from reading what you stated alarms started ringing once she refused to let you pay for the full thing yet however wanted you to pay her half in advance.

fair play for putting it in forums so other guys don't fall for it and get caught

"So you were prepared to pay the full amount, but when she looked for half the amount it must've been a scam? Maybe she had the lucky escape? "

I think it was more the fact if how she was looking the half paid through PayPal

Quite frankly I would never send anyone a payment prior to any meet. Most hotels now a days allow you do book online with no deposit to be paid (yes I know it's up to two days cancelation) most hotels are happy for payment on arrival so what was the need for him to send her advanced payment?

You've dodged a bullet there mate. Why would someone ask you to pay through PayPal for some of the room??

Sounds very dodgy. After all most hotels don't take anything until checkout so I'm you could have settled with her then or even once you were in the room.

Just as well she has you blocked. She's done u a favour!

He's not sure that she wanted him to pay her directly though. He said "I suppose" when asked that question.

if it was using PayPal it was highly unlikely to be the hotel. most hotels these days have proper secure monitored booking systems

It was unlikely, but he obviously didn't ask her. I think we're way too quick to jump to conclusions based on half a story. I think I'll leave it at that.

Well first I wouldn't have agreed to a full on meet, I always meet just for a coffee first see if there's a spark and then take it from there. Hence the question of hotel rooms wouldn't have come up

Arrange to do something in that area at same time or see if you are both going to a m&g and meet there. Even if I go to say the likes of Belfast for a coffee meet I will always pick a day were I'm town to get or do something else. That way if he doesn't show it isn't a waste

100% scam I'd say, clever one too, not exactly something people are likely to pursue through paypal, "eh yeah I agreed to hook up with some girl online and split the hotel room"
