"Mr69: Sooooooooo. Does anyone think that the poor showing by England at the World Cup has anything to do with the policies of no quotas on foreign players(I know there are rules about a certain number of 'homegrown' Players) in league football at home, and as a knock-on effect does this affect the Irish national squad? " Irish National squad just hasnt the scouting systems in place. Even though england have their problems with home-grown players and all they still have a very in depth scouting system. We dont have anything decent when it comes to scouting. Ive played senior football for years in the AUL. I never once got spotted nor any of the players I know would atleast be promising for teams like rovers and that. I eventually got trials at 18 due to mailing shelbourne fc. Just so much wasted talent playing in blinded leagues

"the main problem is thattake a foreign lad as 16 and have him on the books for more than 3 years it gets around the home grown player rule. also there are less and less lads playing football these days and even less with the commitment to training i can remember when i was 15/16 playing i think every kid in my area played football. i coach an u17s team and its a nightmare to get them to get to training and this has been the main problem for the past 3 years at a time when some of them could have been called for trials they just loose interest too busy chasing girls and hanging with their mates (i was the same but didnt have half the skill that some of these lads have). as a club we have sent a few lads to the uk for trials and a few have been picked up but these lads where spotted at 14 before the bad habits kick in." there in lies the prob _aid back, they arent picked up til they are 14,after spending the most important years being coached by amatuer coaches,no offence but im sure ur not at the standard of lafointaine like the french youth academy or ajax academy et el when ajax won the champions league with that famous young team in late 90s,most of the team had being playin together for 14,15 years, the average age at the time was 19

They're really valid points . kids have different priorities now in comparison to years ago in Britain and here. It's easy to see the lack of discipline in a lot of these kids. I played with a few guys who've gone cross channel and a couple that are still there . They weren't necessarily the very best players at schoolboys but they were all the hardest workers . Football was their life and now they are reaping the rewards.

"Money has English football fucked and are English players are just not good enough. This is the worst team they ever sent to a World Cup and were beaten by 2 average teams that both lost to Costa Rica, the same Costa Rica that shearer and Ferdinand laughed at when they beat Uruguay. That's the English mentality." Please join in when you have some more vitriol Mr. Xenophobe.

Oh Right, so that's how get around the 'homegrown' rule is it? Good points about getting them before teenage kicks start. So obviously the F.A. Have a system for nurturing young talent, is it not a big or good enough programme? Or, as has been mentioned, is the attraction for the game starting to decline? Mr69: Btw, this is just an open discussion, no agenda, what about tiredness, are the Premier League players playing too many league matches? I think the league should be smaller. I think tweaks are going to have to be made to the structure of the Premiership but maybe we just have to enjoy what we get week in week out & hope for the best every couple of years.

Actually, i believe the worst England team at a world cup in recent memory was four years ago, this England team though not successful they showed potential. Roy has cleared a lot of jaded, tired players out and brought in youth. I hope he is given a chance to take a team to the next euros & world cup.
