"First thought: I'm against it and judging from the number of murders in the US it doesn't really stop people from killing each other. But if someone I love would be brutally murdered I may change my mind. I don't know. No wonder there are always disputes about this, I can't even make up my own mind ffs" that is exactly how I feel , and it is always easy to think a certain way about something when you don't have a personal attachment, it can certainly change your opinion once it happens to you.

"Just reading about the botched execution of the man in Oklahoma. Just wondering what the opinion is regarding the death penalty? " There's no place for the death penalty in a modern society. I might wish some people dead for what they've done but a government should not kill people full stop.

They're convicted and we then spend £40,000 a year to keep them in Jail, for the next how long? "So come on all you advocates, does it matter how you kill the accused? Maybe an eye for an eye?" Was it Michael Portillo who did the documentary a few years ago about methods of execution? I'm not sure if it was but his contention that the use of nitrogen gas would result in the victim dying in a state of euphoria. It seemed like the ideal way to kill someone but the pro death penalty lobby in the USA weren't having any of it. They preferred the idea of a bit of suffering!

"An eye for an eye leaves everybody blind " There was a system in Ireland one time where the criminal had to make compensation to the victims family for his crime eg if he/she killed a farmer they had to take the farmers place and work the farm. This sort of punishment is more beneficial than prison...... I suppose community service is today equivalent.

"most arab countries still have stoneing as there death penalty i think for murder and other such crimes." Most Arab countries do not have stoning as the death penalty. Stoning is only included in the laws of 4 countries of the Middle East (Arab ) Its also included in the laws of Pakistan, sudan and some areas of Nigeria It's not used for murder, it's used for homosexuality and aldultery ( which includes being raped)

"A society that is willing to take the life of a citizen no matter how heinous the crime can hardly call its self civilised. The criminals on death row in the U.S.A. don't come from mars. Most come from poor under privileged backgrounds If they could afford proper legal representation the majority would avoid death row. Also the average stay on death row is ten years with the appeal system and cost more than it would to keep the prisoner locked up for the rest of his natural life. As a civilised society should be more concerned with the environments that created these criminals and correct the problems there. "

"Killing someone as punishment because they have killed someone seems ridiculous to me. Sorry im a firm believer in a eye for a eye....also if anyone ever hurt my loved one id gladly put the needle in myself... Would u feel the same any if it was ur loved one who was being executed? " Ouch....that's a tough one! I'd feel heartbroken.... Also there are loads of people on death row who commited murders in there teens...people can change...also victim of circumstance is often a large role to play ... But there is lots of reasons why people commit heinous crimes, sociopaths and pedophiles people who get pleasure from torture and killing id fry them!! Loved one or not....

"in america there are 200000 people in prisons for murder so clearly the punishment doesnt scare people from murdering others. the swiss nation have the same right as americans to hold firearms but u dont see them killing every body who says a wrong word to them. i think the death penalty doesnt work so it should be done away with. if any1 can come up with what to replace it with that would be good. what sentance do you give a child killer? a person who rapes and kills a woman? or a person who guns down a rival gang member? Life in prison.for some life with no parole" there should be some labour involved, let them give something back to society at least. Btw, it's harder to get a gun in Switzerland than it is in the US. Although men who are still active in the military keep their weapons at home. Up until a few years ago, they also kept some ammunition at home as well. There were some bad incidents however, considering that around 600'000 households have a weapon at home, it's very very rare. I guess it has to do with how the society works and values are tought. You won't find that much desperate poverty and lack of education in Switzerland as in the US. Put a gun into a hungry, uneducuated and/or abused person's hands and wait for the terror to happen. I'm not justifying people being killed, but just following on what elusive male said

"Forget if they got compensation or not, but they did, do u want ppl convicted on an "unsafe"or "unsatisfactory" conviction? Reading some of the posts, probably" Hmm Noticed how all those in favor of an eye for an eye haven't commented on how it's ok to sentence to death so many for the death if one man.

"The simple truth is... the courts..the laws the prison system IS A JOKE There is No Fear anymore..no Respect. There should be! If someone murders another person.. that's premeditated..or as a result of a crime..robbing a bank or breaking into a home.. they have Taken Another Persons Life! The victim..will never eat sleep or breath again. Why are the laws protecting the guilty...wheres the protection for the victim. If someone I loved was murdered..id want to see the murderer drag through the streets in fear... in public for everyone to see...id want that person hung up to die... all the begging for mercy..pissing themselves... how much mercy has that person shown to the victim!! Our system is falling apart... career criminals.. murderers..rapists are laughing at jail. If u get caught you get look after..u get free food free electricity..free study..free medical.. there's even plans for free internet!!! We have to pay for everything.. where's the justice?? We've all gotten too nicey nicey.. theres no punishment anymore... worrying about human rights of the criminal... a criminal..someone who breaks the law should forfeit their human rights and should b punished! Death penalty.. Yes..only on being 100% proven.. id caught on camera.. or found with the body under the bed. Harder prisons...Yes..chain gangs..splitting rocks Tougher sentencing... Yes Sorry a bit of a rant...just sick of people being too nice " Very well put Mr Wexcock
