Bought an I pad off eBay and the blooming thing is still teathered to someone else's account. After two hours on with apple they basically told me there was nothing I could do. No this evening I was trying to transfer videos from my laptop to my phone and apple strikes again. Even though the videos came off my I phone it will not let me put them back on again totally miffed tonight

Ok the videos if you try loading them into iTunes first might work. The tethered ipad report to eBay. As the seller hasn't sold you a useable unit. Tho there's a way using a program in the computer

There is software that can clear that type of thing, I've done it a few times which I would offer to do for you but I only risk it for friends or family cause they no the risk etc so it's there money I no I'm losing and not a strangers (cause I could end up owning u a new iPad lol) so I would suggest heading to your nearest phone unlocker as they will do it for maybe £20-30

If i'm understanding this correctly, the OP bought an ipad running iOS 7 which the seller left find my ipad turned on in the icloud settings.

Even if the OP wipes the pad and tries to reactivate it, it will look for the previous owners apple ID password.

It's a new feature brought in on iOS 7 to reduce theft. A genuine seller is supposed to remove this before selling, looks like they either didnt know about it, or have a stolen ipad on their hands and want to sell it on.

See if you can contact the seller and if its a genuine mistake they might trust you enough to temporarily change their Apple ID password, give it to you to remove it from the ipad, and then change it back once its done.

or they may tell you to get stuffed.*

*i know a bit about apple stuff.

Bare with me, I'm trying to help,

On the device, have you tried signing out of iCloud? (even if its the previous owners account that is signed in) in particular turning off "Find my iPad." Also try signing out of the iTunes store. Each are found in the settings menu.

Have you tried an forced reboot, and power up into emergency recovery, then do a set up as a new iPad?

(press both home button and sleep button down together, wait for screen to go black, keep them held, Apple logo will appear, wait for it to go black again.) Then plug in the charging lead, and power up....it should then ask you to connect to iTunes, and you can set up as new?

Reading what the couple just said, I would ask seller to do what they said as In ask for it to be unlocked or give u the password Etc so u can wipe it, but before u ask them to do it raise a complaint on eBay and paypal so therefore they no there is a problem with this item, cause if u don't the seller can string u along for 30 days with pointless emails saying ohh I forgot will email u the details tomorrow etc, but if paypal and eBay no u have already complained u will get your money back if the user deletes his account or blocks your emails

Which could be good for u lol you get your money back and a iPad u can sell on if u got it wiped by the phone unlockers lol

At work we have the "Apple vs Everyone else" debate everyday (lets just say I work in an industry closely related). I've tried to help friends on Apple with something as simple as music file transfers, and this was a royal pain that took over 3 hours just to get the damn thing to sync (and yes, that included the software CD and manual!).

I don't have much love for Microsoft/Windows, but at least I can customise hardware/software as I please.

As for mobiles/tablets, I'm so far sold on Android (used to love Nokia/Sony Ericsson, still do secretly) but it will take something special to convert me away,... and possibly winning the lottery twice in the same week to make me like Apple. Trust me, I'm not missing out.

I bought it off eBay from a seller who has been operating since 2011. It was only today when I phoned the seller I found out it was from a pawn brokers, they want me to send back the iPad to them to see if they can fix it, but I am a bit warey if found this because then they could say they never recorded it and I loose out

Software CD? how long ago was that? itunes hasnt been on CD in god knows how long....

music transfers are easy. rip your music to your itunes library, download or purchase from itunes if you feel like shelling out. and sync your iphone. I'l admit itunes is a bit of a pig on windows machines, but 3 hours? something was wrong somewhere.

If they're a pawn broker and do not know the original owners apple ID, then ask for a different ipad, or failing that a refund, cos the only way they can "fix" it would be a dodgy software hack....you dont want that.

Take my advice. also record the serial number of the ipad before you send it back, in case they try to fob you off by "replacing" the same one.

The iPad mini I got is in excellent condition and there is nothing wrong with it apart from bloody Apples teathering crap. To be honest the crap I have had with Apple today I am tempted to get rid of both. It is a rediculious system that they trap people into. When the factory setting are activated it should mean the whole thing, especially since they don't tell you that you have to remove it from your account before getting rid of them

I sympathise with your situation. Its very frustrating. Apple implemented those features to protect your device should it be stolen, the intentions are honourable. Your problem is due to the seller not preparing the goods for sale. Buying used on eBay has its risks. There are some good suggestions on how to move forward here. You could always return the device to the seller via UPS or Fedex, tracked and insured. Whatever you do, i hope you get it working and you can then enjoy your purchase.

I see the mess you are in, clown who sold it should have deleted his account!

I do believe there is a solution but it is somewhat complicated and you definitely need to be willing to take a risk!

The solution is to preform a 'tethered' jailbreak. (not untethered jailbreak, huge difference).

This involves downloading software onto your computer, and running various settings on it to preform the tethered jailbreak!

Once you have done that, you immediately restore it through iTunes and you have a completely clean iPad running latest iOS and no harm done to it! It does work but you need to be willing to sit down and think hard through it!

Apple will never acknowledge this method but I'm more than confident it works!

I'd insist on money back, its unusable. If they don't agree immediately, complain through Ebay

"Omg... I don't understand a word you're all saying. I'm only 41 years old and I'm officially not getting modern technology "

I find its not that people don't get modern technology, its the fact that technology has never had an impact on their lives up till now. Now they either have to learn or get left behind frankly.

In years to come I predict people who can't use technology will be considered the same as people today who are illiterate and say "oh I dont get reading and writing"....nobody is like that, everyone wants to be able to read and write and that's the attitude people should take to technology.

No no what I'm saying is you want to read the manual, you want to learn.

I come across many people who think its funny to say "oh I'm hopeless with technology ha ha ha" like its a badge of honour....no its laziness. They can't be arsed. Its like someone illiterate not wanting to be literate.

Pure laziness.

I don't think that's quite true. Will it not be more akin to driving a car. 30 years ago you needed to know a little about cars to drive especially if an older car. Now you just need to fuel up and keep an eye on the dash display. The owner can just use it for the task in hand without needing to be a mechanic. Technology will go the same way.

I'd hate for the future to be like that. Its breeding a disposable culture. If you grew up with technology like I did, you remember basic programming on the commodore 64, building your own PC from parts, or swaping out a component when it went faulty. I was my family's it guy when I was a teenager.

Nowadays because everything is automated and disposable we're in danger of the next generation being less technically literate than the current one!

I love my gadgets and something like a Tesla roadster is a beautiful machine and possibly the future of motoring, but there's nothing like fixing a car with a toolbox.

I've found that since I have had my iPhone and iPad I have completely no idea about windows any more

I was never brilliant but knew enough to keep a pc running, could put in more memory and bits and bobs like that. But now if my mum has a problem with her pc I'm totally flummoxed , not knowing where to start. I've a windows 7 myself and I still haven't learned my way about it. I'm still ok with xp, sort off. But the less I use the pc the more I forget

Apple is just too easy. Nothing appears to go wrong

I agree with you SS. But for the masses it has to be seriously user friendly. Its why Apple got the jump on Nokia in 07. Beautifully crafted device, worked perfectly out of the box. No tech know-how needed. But no new groundbreaking technology. Nokia N series could do all and more than the Iphone in 05 but it was labouring and you needed to be a bit tech savvy. Smartphones were around a longtime before Iphone but Apple got to the masses.

Indeed. I remember when everyone wet themselves over the first iPhone and I was going "but my n95 can do all that and more!"

The iPhone wasn't good enough for me until the 3GS.

You'll prise my macbook out of my cold dead hands though. If its possible for me to love an inanimate object... 2 years and not a single crash!

My payment can be an orgy with the attendees for ms slut and me.

I'd advise you to seek A refund and buy one, preferably locally so you can see it working before you hand the money over.
