My 11 y/o daughter was giving a phone recently from her grandad (after I warning everyone not to get her one)

It accidentally fell down the toilet recently.

Thoughts please.

Don't think it's appropriate for kids to have them til secondary school at least. My child's friends all have them at 7 which there's no need for.

Firstly what was your reason for not wanting your daughter to have a phone. Secondly what was everyone else involved in her life's view on her having a phone. All the facts have to be weighed up before one can have a proper insighted opinion on this.

My worry with phones now, is that the internet is too easily accessed. No monitoring. Easily bullied/or bully.

What part of the internet would worry you most, as for social media sites can be accessed readily in any school if it is cyber bullying that worries you

My concerns:

1. I see kids in my classes with them/trying to sneak them

2. Serious Distraction For Kids

3. Personally I think society today can't communicate/interact in person too well because of mobile phones.

4. Pick Up Poor Grammar/Text Speak.

computer time in schools is monitored and social media sites are blocked. It's monitoring in general.

Is there not a children's range of non smart phones. I saw them in toysRus. All they can do is call or text. I think it's all an under 14 should be allowed to have.

My eldest got one at 13 purely because he was in an after school program two towns away and rang home when finished. Phone was put away when got home.

In our local school 8 years bringing phones to school and bullying problems with text and snap chat..my 8 girl has asked for phone.. Not going to happen!!

Can totally agree with 1 and 2, however i think that phones can be used for better communications, as for text speak, is it not up to us as parents and teachers to ensure that our kids know the difference between proper grammar and bad grammar, There is an ongoing weekly article in the Irish Times every Saturday that will teach you all the bad grammar you need. Ross O Carroll Kelly has some of the worst grammar ever to grace paper. My one big gripe with a kids phone is the same reason we have school uniforms. To place every child on a level that is the same, not one child having a better phone because their parents can afford it

there is, and also any phone provider can limit the access to certain topical sites. They can also limit the numbers that can be reached

There is a school beside where I work and I sometimes run into some of the pupils in the local shops etc. It always amazes me when they pull out the latest iPhone and they are aged about 12. Who seriously would buy a child a £500 phone. Some parents with more money than sense out there it seems!

I too have an 11 year old. She's not allowed a phone either. She got one at 8 and I simply removed the sim. She has music on it, camera etc...but no internet, calling or texting function. Her friends don't know it has no sim...she just says shes out of credit.

She bought herself an ipod a year later. I had wi-fi removed from the house, and politely knocked on a few neighbours doors and asked them to put passwords on theirs. A few looked at me funny, but I didn't care.

In my day (god I'm old) the house phone was in the hall, and if I didn't want to talk...my brothers said I was busy. End of... being accessible 24/7 isn't healthy.

A friend of mine takes phones away when the kids get in the door....

Its between your daughter, her mam and yourself to decide whats best...but your daughter needs a say too or she'll rebel. I hope I didn't go on too much...but I know exactly where you're coming from x

Save yourself the money. No child over 7 will use these 'baby' phones. Phone providers can not monitor internet accessed through WiFi. Kids are tech savvy and know the apps to download to get past restrictions.

Grandparents did the same for ours at 11 (maybe they're on commission to top up their pensions) after being told not to, hubs handed them straight back.

Secondary school, forget it.

The only way we found to limit the use was to make them pay for the credit so they had to do without something else if they wanted it.

One last nugget...sometimes providers will 'give' you a free phone for minors if you put them on a sub-contract to yours, immediately put a spending limit on the account as apparently they can send over 2000 texts in a single month!

If you're going to get your kids phones regardless of age then you're gonna have to learn those phones back to front so you can monitor or block unsuitable content.

Anything less is lazy parenting.

Absolutely, parents MUST know the password/s and pattern locks of their children's phones. & content has to be checked periodically.

Apparently it's one of the most common ways of damaging phones. I've done it myself, and I know three other people who've done it as well. The guy in the insurance company told me it was their number one problem.

When I collect kids from school there is a very large box at reception of school full of mobile phones for kids to collect on leaving school at the end of the day. The oldest kid in the school is only 11 so its obviously something that isn't a problem for the vast majority of parents that buy their kids the phones

I don't have a child so some people probably will say I'm not allowed to have an opinion on this (especially if it's not theirs)

Call me old fashioned but the negatives are really outweighing the positives here. Why can people not use the landlines when calling their children? Or as someone said the ex partner can call their partners mobile to chat with the children if needed.

It worked 10 years ago, so why not now?

It's hard enough to protect a child when they use a laptop but on a phone it's almost impossible. Remove the sim as someone said because this seems to more a peer pressure thing than anything else.

Well my ex got our daughter one yesterday which I'm not happy with no problem him ringing her on my mobile or the landline and to be fair the type of phone he got her is there very same as my 17 yr old one she got for Xmas

I totally against it

If I was being a bitch and not letting him speak to her fair enough but that's not the case at all.

But to get the same phone as my oldests who waited till Xmas to get hers is lousy to me

Yeah can also mean that while you want to talk to your child you may not want to talk to the ex. My sons too young yet to have a mobile but I will be giving him one when he's old enough. I do have good contact but the downside is also means I have to bite my tongue with the ex to maintain it.

Ok Ive read the thread and I understand all parents concerns. Primary school is too young for a phone. But come secondary school kids need to learn resposibility and I personally dont think that limiting and controlling our kids helps them to get on in life. Talking to them and keeping an open relationship does. Mine are 18 and 14 btw. Different story at that age
