There was a large Russian community established in the Crimea in the 17th century and it remained under Russian control until recent Ukrainian independence. A recent revolution in Kiev has imposed a government that they did not vote for and contains alleged former Ukrainian nationalist terrorists.

I'm sure this sounds familiar! Maybe Britain and America should avoid taking a lead in opposing Russian intervention?

Sorry to get serious

The most surreal thing I've seen in a while was the report on the BBC news a few weeks ago showing the protests. As the reporter was talking to the camera, a protestor in a nazi uniform walked behind him.

This is going to be an interesting one to sort out, and it's a bit more complex than some of the other cases of Russian aggression.

To give a counter argument ( that I don't actually subscribe to)

Nazi Germany invaded the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia in 1938 claiming they were "liberating" the majority ethnic Germans. If we had stood up to Hitler then the second world war would not have happened.

Good night and don't have nightmares!

Will we stop Putin ? No

He will get what he wants and he will rebuild the usser

We ( the west ) have slowed this with our policies of the past

So we really can't now get on our high horses

Well does that mean that Irish civilians living in northern Ireland need and should get protection from the republic of Irelands defence force

London

In fairness after WW1 a lot of Germany was given away to countries like Poland and czechoslovakia. German land with ethnic Germans living in it so like Hitler or not one could argue that he was right to take back these territories?

Same thing happened after the fall of the USSR where ethnic Russians found themselves to be part of different or newly formed countries.

Remember history is written by the victors everyone and that doesn't nessecerily make them the good guys in every respect.

Please clarify op as this does not sound familiar to me in a local context at all. Revolution? Imposed government? I'm just not clear as to which country you are alluding to.

Not exact match but

Argentina, Bolivia, China, etc and yes Ireland as well. All I was pointing out was there was more than the view that the media shows. Most of us can recognize that there is more than one side to any national dispute even if the other "side" is contrary to our own view.

Ukraine now and Hitler in Sudetenland back then is all about oil and gas resources, pipeline routes etc... they just keep all that quiet and play on peoples nationalist feelings. Leaving cert history never mentioned oil back when I did it.

Northern Ireland has nothing to do with oil so it just bubbles on and gets used to massage egos for people like Clinton.

Let's stick to the sex guys, there are politics forums if you really want to discuss this at length.

The world has become too passive in my opinion, Syrian president commits genecide using chemical weapons, Russia invade Ukraine and on both occasions the worlds leaders stand by and watch it happen, imposing posing trade sanctions, trade sanctions ??? I love the way Russia invades while the west "intervenes".

I suspect the hesitancy on behalf of world leaders has something to do with the complete fuck up they made in Iraq and Afghanistan?

One of the complications here is that Crimea is an autonomous republic within Ukraine, rather than simply Ukrainian territory. The parliament of Crimea has voted to ask for Russian assistance. It's not as straightforward as it appears.

Mixed messages from Putin though.

First he persecutes homosexuals in Russia, then he enters Ukraine through the back door.

I'm confused!

I disagree. I don't imagine that the presence of this thread diminishes any of the other threads in any way, and it's surely natural that people would want to discuss occasional topical events. Sure it's only us dry shites that are posting here anyway
