broadband advice

Heya everyone just curious whats the best company to go just for fast broadband where with eircom at the moment and tbh its crap very slow etc and getting charged way over the top on monthly bills and im not sure who I will go with any info would be a great help thanks I dont want the phone just the internet thanks again

I'm with Vodafone for landline and internet.... All fast enough and good packages there.

We where with those before with there wifi yokes but our internet ran out every 2 or 3 weeks so we would have to wait another week to get it back

Na like they give ya certin internet allowance for like 20 euro a month but it never last you watch a video or stream online and its gone within seconds

Upc is pretty fast im not sure how much its on its own.

Its around €37 a month for the 50mb speed from upc and its very fast and reliable

I found buying my own modem rather than using that crap one from eircom solved all my problem, like loss of signal and slow speeds, use belkin router now and it's perfect ,

We'd have to reccomend Vodafone but I can't give you any details as it's our very nice neighbours wi-fi.

we had a guy live next door to us in kilkenny an we use to pick up his wifi handy out lol

If the UPC infrastructure is in your area, get it. it would be the fastest.

If it's not you cant get it as they would install the fiber on a town/housing estate basis, not for a single person.

If you're getting broadband over your landline, ultimately it all comes from eircom as they own the lines. so whatever speed you get from eircom you'll typically get from sky or vodafone at home, but you may get a bit of a better deal.

for example, my phone line can only handle up to 8meg which means realistically i get 6meg, now i'm with vodafone at home so my package is 37 a month, which includes calls after 6 (never use my home phone) and a 300gb monthly allowance.

If you switch providers you may not improve your speed but you might save a few quid, and get a better download allowance.

I refuse to use eircom, but i've been with sky and vodafone, and found vodafone the best for my needs.

Protip: whatever router they give you, throw it away and buy your own. it'll be expensive, but worth it in the long run.

generally speaking thats true, the last mile from the exchange or cabinet (for FTTC enabled locations) is the same and the capability will not change, however Vodafone / Sky and some others have deployed their own DSLAM's into eircom exchanges which means they can have lower contention ratios / more capacity on the backhaul.

I found VF better then Eircom and the only difference was the terminating DSLAM in the local exchange....

of course that will all go out the window when efibre eventually arrives

bottom line is check different carriers in your area (with neighbours ideally) and for goodness sake avoid broadband dongles as thats just 3G backhaul and can be very patchy and expensive
