Catherine streets like this for well over 2 years now!! It's only become news since someone put stickers over a sign to say its the red light district! More fuss over the sign than anything else! They normally stand around a street corner that has 2 busy pubs either side and don't harass people walking along! The guards do move them along but they are back an hour later, obviously a good demand for their services!!!

Last year I was in Limerick for work and my GPS picked up a place name as "Place" rather than "street". The correct place was grand but I went to the other and found literally dozens of escorts standing at street corners. They were in twos and threes. Smithfield at its worst back in the 80's had the odd poor divil who would pop out of at laneway hissing "business business" at you and giving you a fright.

But this was something else and I have never seen anything so blatant. I don't think it would be tolerated in most other Irish cities to be honest and am amazed it is in Limerick.

It's not a very busy street after 7pm in fairness, its obvious what these girls are at but as long as they are just standing around chatting to each other and not touting for business then its not against the law! They just seem to be left at it by the guards who drive along now and again!!

Well if there just chatting theres not alot the gaurds can do but they know what there doing but just no proof like i live in a tourist area and see tons of girls hanging around but i know there not hookers by looking at them

Yes it's obvious what these girls are at but I've heard now they have look outs to spot the guards and they know how to cover themselves legally or just ignore it!! It'd probably be better if it was legal like other countries then it'd be off the street

Yeh id pefare if it was off the street myself if it was legal here it would be safer for both the girls an there customers or clients

A GANG of Romanian criminals is behind a sinister prostitution racket that has turned a well-known part of Limerick city into a red-light district, a Sunday Independent investigation reveals.

not being a prick but what does a hooker look like have driven past these spots ok there the obvious ones but some more just look like ordinary girls on a night out I think at this point the trade is mostly gang driven and some kind of regulation would probably be better than some stories we hear of girls enslaved to it

Was never my cup of tea but it is the oldest trade in the world nothing survives unless its profitable maybe they should look at it in a revenue generating way at least the girls then have to be licenced and the benefits

of that is they can access help if needed

yes but most of those women have no choice to be out there.they are being abused by pimps.at least if it was legal there might be a better chance for some of those women to earn some money for their families or whatever in a better place than the side of a road

in many countries beeing prostitute is recognised as a job description, e.g. germany.

if the girls working on their own they do have to pay tax, but it is of course very hard to proof what kind of income they actually generate. so mst girls do pay a good bit tax because they also will receive free medical/health service and all the benefits.

providers of hostels etc who employ a girl do have to pay tax for her and for theirself and have to pay "prsi" and also social and health benefits.

it was kinda semi legalised about 6-7 years ago to prevent forced prostitution and getting rid of the gangs, which came from eastern europe mainly. by the looks they travelled all over here now -(
