The original telegr*ms offered by the postal service charged a flat fee for the first 10 or so words and extra per word after that. Full stops and commas were counted as extra words.

A guy cycled from the Post Office to your house to deliver the written message. It mostly brought bad news.....but at least it didn't involve bitchy group chats....
