Hi all! I've learned since joining fab that I'm a bit more shy than I thought! A busy work life stops me from attending socials more often than I want, but when I do attend, even though people are as nice and welcoming as can be, I find myself paralysed not knowing what to say!

Especially as a guy on the younger end, it can be hard to know who to speak to when you first walk in, especially when everyone seems to know each other and you worry they might not want to chat because of your age!

How do people like to introduce themselves to new people at socials? And what do you like to chat about yourself with newly met fabbers? I don't want to come on too strong and launch right into what im looking for in the bedroom, but I don't want to leave people wondering why that lad just spoke about the weather either!

If you're going to a social then join the chat group for the social beforehand so you'll have spoken to people in the week coming up to it and know people

Get your name out there in the group

People will say hello to you on the night

Leave the sex talk for another time....its a social ....its for having a bit of chat and craic

Good advice!

I'd be fairly confident and would have no issue approaching people. That said, going to socials on your own can be quite daunting.

Some people just don't want to chat, and others are also very shy!

If there is a pre-drinks being organised, it's good idea to get to that. Treat it like a night out, more than a swingers night. Just chat about anything and everything depending on the vibe.

Most importantly, don't fear rejection or over think it, just move on!

See if there's someone going who might meet you at the venue and walk in with you.

I knew someone who always kindly offered to do that for anyone going alone to a social.

Keep the chat as you would on an evening out and just be yourself.

A lovely tip! I'll keep that in mind! Maybe if you're ever at a Dublin event I could message you to do that!

Definitely don’t talk sex talk at a social. Post in the social group and get involved with chats. We could be chatting about taking the dog to the vets. Ask if anyone is meeting for pre drinks and meet up with them regardless if they are male or female. If a newbie is going I will meet them and introduce them to at least 3 others I know at the social. Me personally and it works for me I introduce myself to other males at the bar. Earn the respect of other male part of couples and hopefully he will introduce you to his partner. Always remember a social is just a social and it’s not about getting the leg over on the night. But get involved in group chats. Another tip. If you see someone with tattoos ask them what their tattoos mean. Try it in everyday life with people that have tattoos. Such an easy way to get talking to someone. Also say it in the group your nervous and I bet someone will reach out to meet you before or at the social

If there is someone in particular you want to meet ask the hosts to point them out. I'm always asking people if they know who "x" is. And we've met some wonderful people this way.

DV8 Sunday social is a perfect introduction to attending socials. It’s non commital, free, open to non verified members. It’s a pub like atmosphere which you can join and leave whenever. Go for an hour or go for 6 hours. Don’t overthink it and manage your expectations

Go to pre social drinks,

Tag along with whoever you meet and go with them to the main event,

Make a point of meeting the male partners, find common ground and shoot the breeze.

If they think your sound, you'll get introduced to the men's partners.

Take it from there.
