Iv been advised by a fuel merchant to put a tank in the yard and fill it as fuel will start to be rationed in a few weeks time and the price could well cross three euros per liter.

I don't normally believe things I see on social media but a local businessman that I know through work is in Spain every couple of months and posted pics of the signs at the filling stations over there and said they hadn't changed at all.

Another guy I know as a mountain guide across Europe expected to have to increase his airport transfer charges to clients and was surprised when he went back to France and nothing had changed.

The fuel prices increased across Europe. The "Ireland only" thing keeps coming up but is simply not true. Source: first hand feedback from people living in France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands and the UK. Some German regions have fuel prices at and over 2.20 per litre Diesel now so we are actually not the worst in Ireland. Average Diesel price in Germany is around 2.17 EUR/l for today.

We changed one car to electric and this one, despite being meant to be the second car for school and shopping trips, is now the main car.

Running costs are much lower with the caveat that we are 99.5% charging at home with EV rate. The other car is really only used if we need to tow the trailer.

prices at public chargers are horrendous and costs would be equal or more than Diesel/ petrol if using only public chargers. The main issue with public chargers is actually the pricing - its significantly higher than even peak rate home charging in most cases which is ridiculous.

I agree to an extent about the pricing but there's a trade off between pricing and availability of a charger when you need them, high pricing helps minimize people hogging them unnecessary

There's also a very high capital cost in supplying public chargers

I can understand why they cost so much to use

You don't need a solar system to charge at home. Energy suppliers offer different packages. Like another poster above mentioned, people can switch to EV / night rates and just charge the car at particular times. This way people can avail of cheaper charging rates.

Charging costs are low once you are on an EV rate with your supplier and lower than public chargers in any case, even if you are on a standard tariff. There is no need for solar (yes, we do have a large solar system and no, its not significantly charging the car. it makes more financial sense to export during the day for the CEG and charge with the cheap ev rate during the night.)

you get grants for the charger, too.

"I agree to an extent about the pricing but there's a trade off between pricing and availability of a charger when you need them, high pricing helps minimize people hogging them unnecessary"

I see lots of free chargers at any given time but we are not in Dublin, I assume there its a bit different. high pricing is not minimizing anything bar EV take up for people with no option to install home chargers. Also: there are overstay fees with every provider, so parking at a charger isn't the best idea in most cases

For goods mainly, although I have a crew cab now.

Most of the vans are wildly expensive, haven't got the range, or are to small.

The market is currently very volatile. So it's not the best time to make any significant changes. As an EV driver for 3 years, I would highly recommend it. My car has a range of 350 winter and 420 summer. A full charge at home costs approx €7. I have solar panels which provide 75 percent of my electricity so this is largely offset. It takes some adjustments but I got used to it after driving a 2l diesel for 20 years.

Yeah, fair enough if you regularly do longer treks, diesel is the only job.

Hydrogen won't be the answer, even if you figured out safe storage and distribution, fuel cell technology just hasn't scaled and combustion of hydrogen is just too inefficient. Faster charging batteries will be much more practical.

Until that happens, diesel will prevail with ever increasing biofuel content.

I find it mad considering that the majority of Ireland oil comes from the north Sea and not the middle east. Price gouging is well and truly still alive here.

As for electric, I drive for a living and work nights, so not really an option for me unfortunately. I would be dou g most of my charging on the higher electricity tariffs and most EVs dont have the range i would need yet.

If the government were serious about renewable energy, they would force electricity suppliers to provide solar & small wind turbines, with battery pack,to all with a 5-10yr payback included in your electricity bill. If the reduction in energy costs are genuine, then it's a win-win for all. The consumer pays the same, or probably reducing amount if global warming continues, has guaranteed electricity from solar & wind combo, electricity companies get free power back from consumers which they sell on to data centres, government meets it's climate commitments and doesn't have to pay fines to EU. In 10yrs time, we all have a minimal bill as loan is paid off, so we can afford to buy EV's, the climate is saved and the majority of data centres in Europe are in Ireland and all our kids are employed. Electric companies could even charge a 10% levy on the bill after the 10yrs so that, when your solar has to be replaced after it's 25yr lifespan, they carry it out for free!

I'm sure there's holes to be poked in this but surely it's a good idea in general?

I sincerely hope you all keep believing the daftness about EVs. Please, keep buying petrol and diesel.

I say this because I'm driving electric for four years . Changed my 3 year old one last year for the same model. Bought both new.

My 3 year old electric car had 89, 000 km that I drove on it when I sold it. Cost to change after selling it for a brand new one? €6,000

My commute is 120 kms per day. Say your petrol car does 5 litres per 100 Kms. At 2 euro per litre that's 12 euro per day.

My car takes 35 kws to do 120 kms

I plug it in when I get home, plug it out when I leave. Takes 1 minute. My night rate electricity costs less than 10c per kw. That's €3.50 per day.

I am just hoping and praying that you guys continue to swallow the bullshit propaganda of big oil

Because when you eventually realise your being screwed, and buy electric. The government will start taxing per kilometre, take away the tax breaks, and my commute will get more expensive.

In the meantime. Your all being taken as mugs! Keep buying the patrol lads. I'm laughing at you each time I drive past a petrol station

"My night rate electricity costs less than 10c per kw.

Our current EV rate is 6c. Thats a 3h window (2 to 5 am) and that specific plan works best for us due to solar panels and house battery. That equals ~0.80 EUR (Summer) to ~1.10 EUR (Winter) for 100km. For comparison, our (older) Diesel car is currently at around 11-12 EUR for 100 km.

Keep in mind that that only works out for us because we are able to fully charge at home with no public charging required due to low overall daily milage. If you need to charge publicly, costs are ten times that.

The best electricity plan depends on a lot of factors but thankfully, if you are on a smart meter, you can export your annual usage and upload that into comparison websites which in turn will provide you with the best plans suited for your actual usage. Even if you dont have an EV yet you can manually add that in to adjust what they show you.

On a side note: I did not expect to discuss electricity prices on a swinger website but here we go anyways, I'm off to see some boobies

"Surely a 3 hr window is not enough to charge a car and the rate is higher than normal outside those hours "

It depends on how much you use the car. 3 hours charging would put 21kwh in a car. That's roughly half the capacity of a Hyundai Inster or a third of a Tesla standard range model.

I do a lot more mileage so I use a standard day night plan where there are 9 hours of a reduced rate (13c per kW). As a result I try to also use other high load appliances at night. Currently over 70% of my electricity consumption is at night.

EV's work but you have to make sure it suits your lifestyle. It is imperative to do the research.

Sorry for the boring reply.

"I heard the oil crisis in Iran may cause a 20% increase in the cost of flights or potential widespread cancellations due to jet fuel shortages. Anyone else heard this rumour or is it just a sales trick to get holiday makers to book early?

If the government doesn't step up this week and do something..nobody will be going anywhere..

Independent tds hauliers farmers and buisness people have a huge protest organised to stop the m50. The port and Dublin airport next week before they break this little country completely

As long as they don't cancel any next week 🤞🤞"
