Hi, just curious if anyone has moved from shift work back to a 9 to 5. I have been doing shift work for 9 years now and need a change so looking to change job. Has anyone done it and how did they find the change? I'm sure it will be hard at the start as my sleep pattern will change etc. Interested in people's experience of this and did they have any regrets.

Limerick, Clare, Tipperary

Worked 12 hrs shifts day/night. Lasted about a year, couldn't stand it. So, after week of holidays back to the 'normal' hours without any issues at all.

Mind you, your sleep pattern is totally fecked after 9 years, so it will take longer to adjust, however, it's hard to beat sitting for hours in commuting traffic and all that You'll be fine

Did night shift for 2 years and then 3 years of 12hrs nights/days a month of each

During covid we did a few nights aswell

Sleep took a while to get back on track

Felt a lot healthier after I stopped

No regrets I should have stopped it sooner

The Road to Nowhere

3 years on a 12 hour shift cycle (2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off). Moved to a 9 to 5 about 9 years ago. I actually took 2 weeks between jobs to try & sort my sleep cycle...how silly of me! I was exhausted for the first few months it felt. It took a while to get used it & there were a lot of fights with myself to stay awake/sleep at the 'right' times but it was worth it in the end.

Yeah it looks like it will be a tough change but worth it in the long run. It's the sleeping part that concerns me most but should eventually sort out and at least I will be eating at normal times and feel healthier.

Did 12 hour night shifts for 3 years before going back to working days. Best thing I ever did. 2 weeks on the beer sorted the sleep pattern too.😂

Id defo take some time off in between jobs if you do switch, my two cents if weigh up pros and cons of both, I know myself I do 3 x12s fair there long days and sleeps affected but then your only commuting 3 days saving petrol plus the time off is great to get stuff done.

Shift work can be very tough on the body, I’m doing 24/7 shifts 2 days 2 nights the last 11 years. It’s tough and the sleep pattern is all over the place, the biggest issue of changing to days is you’re working 5 days a week now and you’ve dropped the shift premium. Day shifts and a normal sleep pattern are definitely healthier no question about it

I already work 5 days on shift and 6 some weeks but if I move it will be to a completely new job with more money but just Mon to Fri. It would be great to have my nights and weekends back. As you say it's definitely hard on the body doing shift work.

If it’s a case that you’re moving to a role that has far better working hours and the money is better too, then it’s a no brainer. It will be a small adjustment and you’ll take to it fairly quick.

Best of luck with it

I done shift work for 25 years, days, nights & weekends, I left that job last September and now work for myself, its the best decision you'll nake to stop shift work.

Your home every evening and weekend and it'll add years to your life

Cork

Worked all different types of shift work since I first started working nights, days, evenings, 12hr shifts, weekend shifts,2 cycle.3 cycle, 4 cycle you name it i did it.

10 years ago I started the job that I am still in now. 7am-3-30pm hard to adjust sleep wise at first but so worth it to get some kind of life balance back could never go back to shift work now.

In a place not far from...

Affects us all differently. Used to work in a 2 cycle shift, 6-2/2-10 - the odd time, I'd do nights, 10-6.

I hated the drag with watching the time to get out and used to leave my breaks as late as possible.

I liked nights because there was feck all people about and it flew.

Did 12hr shifts, they're a drain.

In a different job, I'd have a 24/48 hr stint with a few power naps, now that was a killer.

I can safely say, I never have a problem with going to sleep, but trying to get that deep uninterrupted sleep pattern is fcuked permanently (can't blame the shift patterns for that though)

Dungannon/Belfast/Donegal

Always hated shift work myself, had 3 different shifts to do. One of the shifts started at 11:00 on a Sunday night through to 8:00am on Monday. Totally messed up my sleep pattern, physical and mental health. Walked anyway from the job in the end and have never worked shifts again.
