Looking like a very clear victory for Catherine Connolly.

Looking forward to having her put the interests of the country first and being a president for all of the people in the performance of her duties as Head of State and the supreme commander of the Irish Defence Forces.

Perhaps a little premature but...

Comhghairdeas a Uachtaráin

Its official.

Catherine Connolly is our new President.

Refreshing to hear President Elect Connolly rising above the political clamour and declaring so strongly that she will be President for all irrespective of their politely allegiance and whether or how they voted.

I read the comments section of the Mail and most posts seem to be predicting doom & gloom and the breakdown of Irish society. They have no concept of the lack of power of an Irish president.

Well, that's what you get for reading the Daily Mail

No sympathy for that here.

Ireland is no longer the Country it was , they're letting in completely unvetted people into this Country & are suffering the Consequences of doing so & a person doesn't have to read the Mail to see that. The Government of this Country is totally responsible for that & how is the President gonna do something about that when the President has no political power as such like France or America .

Yes, it's no longer the country it was. We've stopped locking up young women who get abusedto use as free labour. We've stopped sending people out of the country to buy condoms and to terminate life threatening pregnancies. We've mostly stopped bullying and intimidating people with different sexual preferences.

Where were the 'protect the women' thugs when McGregor was abusing that woman so hard that the doctor needed a forceps to remove her tampon? Where were the "Protect the children' thugs when Irish children were being abuse and beaten by their Irish families?

Protect, me arse.

I don't think there was ever a vetting system for people coming to Ireland. Ireland has changed, just like the rest of the world has. That's just life, you can embrace it, you can fight it but things will still keep changing. negative thinking most often leads to negative outcomes though. Better to envision the positives if you ask me.

Wow we've had very different Irish experiences obviously. As someone working in the social and educational sector I've seen the massive investment the government is putting into supporting young people experiencing disadvantage. I've benefitted from that support myself at times, gratefully, or I honestly probably wouldn't be here. Is it perfect, no, but a social democracy is as near as we are going to get in my opinion. And Catherine Connolly is our representative of that. I'm delighted the majority chose her. ✌🏻🕊️

I don't really get involved in political posts here but to be super clear, with 46% turn out, the majority didn't choose anyone. The majority chose not to bother their arse voting.

30% of the voting population voted for the her and she should be congratulated for winning.

Bigger issue for me is the poor turn out yet again.

Bigger issue for the government is the near 6% of the voting population who spoilt their vote as protest.

If that number continues to grow we could see the rise of a reform style irish party and that could be a good or bad thing depending on where you lie on the political spectrum.

"don't believe everything you read on the Internet."

Anything on the internet related to current affairs certainly needs to be viewed with a sceptical eye, that's true,

But not everyone gets their information from MSM, social media or hearsay on the wind.

You're also correct when you say that there is ongoing vetting, immigration officials do know what is coming into the country and what is not going back out.

How does it work that you believe this is a BIG problem? Like of all the problems facing us, climate change, social media algorithms controlling our culture, capitalist systems ensuring that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, total breaching of social contract locking a couple of generations out of any chance of housing, what makes you think that someone desperate enough to leave their country/family/friends behind and look for a better future gaming the system is the BIG problem that we need to be talking about?

We've had a couple of generations of right wing media demonising immigrants across the Western world as a very effective distraction to make sure we don't think to hard about the real problems.

I'm not sure this link will work, but if it doesn't, search for the ‘Careful mate, that foreigner wants your cookie’ cartoon featuring Rupert Maxwell.

They know WHO is coming into the country and WHO is not going back out. They're people, real people, actual human beings, not objects, people who just happen to have been born in a different place and different culture to you.

Let's stop depersonalising people.

In fairness to her, she got a significantly higher % vote than Michael D, and a higher number of votes than anyone has every gotten in an Irish election. More people came out to vote for her than have ever come out to vote for anyone.

Much of the media will be very happy to tell you that the 'big issue' is the protest vote, as they're absolutely shit scared of the slightest possibility that the kind of broad left movement that achieved a great result in this election could build on that momentum moving forward.

They have absolutely failed the Irish people on housing. Healthcare is a bit more complicated. We've made huge progress over where we were 20 or 30 years ago. Survival rates for cancer, stroke, heart attack and much more are much much better than they were in the past. Yes, there are still very serious and fundamental problems in the health service, just as there are in every health service around the world, and there are lots of other things that our governments have screwed up.

Let's not forget though that we had a democratic election a year ago, where voters decided to basically continue things as they are. My top voting preferences would not have been for the government parties. They'd have gotten low preferences just to make absolutely sure to keep the far-right crazies out of any chance of office here. But they won that election, that's why they're in government, whether we like them are not.

BTW, the Health service is hugely dependant on migrant workers. And any chance of building more houses is going to need lots of migrant workers too.

The only people who lost their pensions/retirement money were the fools who had all their eggs in one basket, usually Irish financial shares or Irish construction shares. Anyone else who followed well established basic principles of reducing investment risk had their pension spread across lots of sectors and lots of countries. They may have lost a bit in the crash, but they've more than made it back up since then.

They may have lost a bit in the crash, but they've more than made it back up since then."

"I read the comments section of the Mail and most posts seem to be predicting doom & gloom and the breakdown of Irish society. They have no concept of the lack of power of an Irish president.

Protect, me arse."

Hear hear. So much to get through between the rose tinted glasses looking back at a past that was far more unjust and cruel than most remember but also the hypocrisy.

There's conclaves of Irish folk or descendants of us all over the world because as soon as it was possible, we were emigrating on mass and often treated early on as if we were total vermin. Then, as soon as we started to get successful in the late 90s to today, people started to freak out completely, not recognising how absolutely ridiculous it was for us people to act in the same way we were greeted in so many places when our ancestors for fleeing hardship.

Yes, there are challenges of course and we need to ensure we have infrastructure capable of supporting the lives of the people here as well as not wanting harmful behaviours or ideologies to spread (open-mindedness doesn't cover accepting that certain cultures should be allowed to mutilate the genitals of their kids as just an example), but putting all the blame and focus on poor people trying to ensure a better life for themselves and their kids is just such a useful distraction.

Nearly 40% of the world's wealth is controlled by 1% of the global population and that percentage is increasing. Trickle down economics just does not work and just increases the amount massed in the upper echelons of society that reaches truly unfathomable totally imaginary amounts, where companies can reach a certain size and just get away with the most horrendous behaviour but still outcompete and destroy small competitors due to mass marketing, being prioritised as "good for the economy" and being at a scale where wide scale exploitation is so easy and often helped by our financial systems and the free trade drawn up to ensure global north firms have massive sway in how societies all over are structured.

If you were born at the year 0 and got paid €20,000 a day every day for 2025 years, you wouldn't even be in the top 100 richest in the world.

Money is just a concept we humans have imagined and created to simplify trade between strangers, but we've lost total control of it. It's become utterly immaterial and totally detached from the objective reality we actually live in as a species, but of absolute importance in the structure of the artificial imagined reality we have created around ourselves, where the totally absurd and unfathomable amounts only a tiny minority of the global population possess is infinitely more valuable than the amounts most of the general population deal with, so as the systems chase more of those ludicrous amounts, the actual value of the wealth possessed by the majority of the population declines in response.

These sorts of problems are far more complex and harder to deal with than just "build a wall around Ireland and keep everyone else out" but are far more fucking important if we want any chance of a decent and just future. First step is recognising how so much of this is a huge big shared fantasy we are all trapped by.

There are no happy endings on our current trajectory, just different levels of fucked, and one of the worst is that a very rich very well protected minority of the global population remain safe and comfortable as the rest of the world burns with ai surveillance and military technologies helping to ensure the poor stay in line, or stay manipulated and distracted squabbling amongst themselves. There's a great many already building high tech luxury bunkers, because they're aware of what's coming.

I don't mean any offense to anyone by this but it will probably offend some.

You must be a very special kind of thick to be unable to understand the role of the President of Ireland and confuse it with anything relating to how our country runs.

Best of luck to Catherine in representing the very best version of us.

It is always a little heartening to come onto the fan forums and find that the majority of our community is like the majority of the Irish people by and large inclusive, tolerant and able to engage their own thoughts and not blindly follow the lowest common denominator.b

Yes, we are quite aware of that. That's why we said nothing will change unless those responsible for 100 years of failure are gone.

I think the key is in the 100 years bit......

If the various governments that have been in place for the past century were such abject failures we would have had some type of viable alternative in place many years ago....

"I really love the they're letting unvetted into the country argument

When was the last time anyone here got Garda vetted before they went on holidays and for work or anything else out of this country.when was the last time you got on a plane without a passport never like everyone else no one gets on a plane without a passport stop getting all your information off Facebook and tiktok.

People are getting off planes without a passport and are still here years later, how does that work?

Thank you Shauna, incredibly well put. We need to hold on to our critical thinking and not be distracted by the billionare social media owners and corporations, getting rich off people's emotions and ignorance.
