Can anyone explain to me what 1st&10 or even 3rd&5 means……. In simple terms please. Lol.

Googled it…… but just can’t get my head around it

A nice rock

You have 4 attempts(downs) to gain 10 yards, each time you gain the 10 yards the downs rest to 4.

So so 1st and 10 is 1st attempt with 10 yards to go.

3rd and 5 is 3rd attempt and 5 yards left to gain
