Is holding a door for a lady or persons unknown still polite or has it become sexist too.

I still do it....for both ladies or gents.

But the prevalent use of automatic doors has reduced the opportunity to display this simple act of politeness.

I still hold doors for anyone coming through regardless of gender but I've had abuse a handful of times from women for doing so.

Some were just rude about it and made some snide comment but one asked me if my parents were proud of raising a cunt?

She was half my age.

Ah no, that's grand actually. When that happens I just bend down and start sprinting towards the door, watching fear and realisation build up in their eyes in slow motion leading to a release of the door in a futile attempt to turn around and flee as I finally breach the contact perimeter and rugby tackle them to the ground.

The HR department loves me.

I will always hold the door open for the person behind me, even if theyre a little bit further away. I was only saying yesterday is this becoming a thing of the past.

I was in a coffee shop and was leaving with my child in the buggy and as I was approaching to pull the door open a man came to the door at the same to enter. He got to the door first so I thought great he will at least hold the door save me trying to open, hold with my foot and pushed the buggy out. Nope he walked in and left the door close, there is no way he didn't know i was leaving. So had to open the door again, hold with foot and manoeuvre the buggy out! So rude.

Yeah this...

I hate it when someone holds the door forcing me to speed up. I'm happy to open a door myself. I generally slow down or look away so they don't. Also I'm very impatient, and always in a hurry and if I'm stood there waiting for them to speed up I'd be worried I'd just give up 🙈

And where I work it's all security doors and it's not a good idea to hold them open for just anyone.

I can't say this is something I've ever given a single thought to.

If I open a door and there's someone coming and it's convenient for both of us I'll hold it. I don't remember ever noticing whether someone said thanks or not.

I honestly think if I was bothered about people not saying thanks I'd stop holding doors for my own peace of mind.

You'd kinda ruin your act of good manners by getting smart about it if they don't reciprocate though.

I know it's rude when someone doesnt acknowledge your considerate action but that's on them. Who knows what's going on there. You do you!

I hold the door for others, especially buggy pushers! I've been that soldier😂

Just being a good human being - hold door for someone who doesn’t need to canter to the door. What goes around comes around. Holding a door open for someone might result in them doing something nice another person, which may eventually come full circle back to you.

It's a minefield!😳

My gym is upstairs.

If there's someone ahead of me on the stairs, I like to keep well back, so they don't feel like I'm staring at their arse! 👀

But then.. if they hold the door at the top of the stairs, I'm like 'oh fuck'... now I have run up these stairs 🥵 - so they're not holding it too long 😫

I'll still say (an out of breath) thanks, but I'll be quietly raging!!🤣🤣

Amazing how holding a door open can be viewed so differently.

For me its just good manners, no matter for who or why you hold it open or assist with opening it. Once you are not being complicit in committing a crime, I might add.

Good experience - all the people who say thank you, are pleasant and appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Bad experience - Holding a door open for a woman who I knew, but was then informed that she didn't need my chivalry. Said in a condescending and ignorant mamner. Never forgot how bad mannered she was.

I can’t believe some of the stories of abuse here, holy fuck, what sort of a world are we living in.

Thankfully I’ve never experienced anything more than not being acknowledged for holding a door open, and I thought that was rude, but I’ll continue to do it and teach the next generation to do the same.

Manners, courtesy and sense are not as common as they once were……..

"I can’t believe some of the stories of abuse here, holy fuck, what sort of a world are we living in.

Thankfully I’ve never experienced anything more than not being acknowledged for holding a door open, and I thought that was rude, but I’ll continue to do it and teach the next generation to do the same.

Manners, courtesy and sense are not as common as they once were…….. "

"I still hold doors for anyone coming through regardless of gender but I've had abuse a handful of times from women for doing so.

Some were just rude about it and made some snide comment but one asked me if my parents were proud of raising a cunt?

She was half my age. "

Really? Maybe she was talking to herself

Wow, I'm shocked by the level of abuse some people have experienced, I've had a little but nothing to these levels.

I'll always hold the door open for anyone and everyone. I don't remember being taught it growing up, it just seems the right thing to do.

Can get a little embarrassing when lots of people come through at once and you're stood there a while.

I held the door open for a fella coming the other way in a busy shopping centre yesterday...I'm still here now.
