Seems to be going around lately. It’s a pretty simple scam that’s effective when the stars align. Receive a text from a random number saying phone is dead. Can you send money to this IBAN. It’s not the person that receives the text that sends the money but they contact their son/daughter/partner to send money.

I know one person who was done of €1700 already and my parents just contacted me to send my brother money. When I contacted my brother, his phone wasn’t dead and it wasn’t his IBAN. Be careful and be aware

Middle of nowhere, the centre of everywhere

Yea, smishing is becoming more and more common and prolific.

As usual, the common sense should apply. If any messages are received, best course of action is to check with the source directly, and never following links in these messages.

Belfast

This has been happening since before COVID. Christmas eve 2019 I had 74 scam calls and texts and are least a dozen were similar to this scenario.

Christmas eve 2020 I had over 90 calls from landlines and mobiles but no texts and the following 2 years on Christmas eve again I had just short of 100 calls each time.

I blocked most of them and reported and on Christmas Day 2023 my grandson asked why I had blocked his new mobile number?

He had got lost among the spammers 😁

I'm quite upset by the quantity of children I have, and they all have dead phones.

Will they ever learn?

around here somewhere

There is so many at that Craic it's unreal , 1st of all your parents would NEVER ask for money to be sent to an IBAN number & plus they'd ring you yourself so if you're asked that , hang up & block number BUT they'll have a new number tomorrow & ring you on that , they're absolutely horrible to do that to anyone BUT they don't give a F**K
