Im driving 33yrs and wouldn't be without my car, my son is 18 and no interest at the moment because all his friends have cars so there's no point🙄

I was meeting someone recently and agreed to meet at the hotel, two trains and a taxi later he arrived i just assumed he was driving when booking it....🙈

I passed my driving test first time in 1992. I remember my first car Toyota 🚗 Starlet not very cool but very reliable.

There are a lot of people who have not learnt to drive. Car insurance is very expensive here in Ireland.

My kids are 18 and 21 and both have zero interest, my sons friend's all drive and have cars hes like sure what's the point I just get a lift off them, my daughter is just a nervous nelly and the thought just turns her off especially when she'd have the baby with her.....🤷

I regrettably never learned to drive for a few reasons.

When I was around 18 or so, the insurance was just too expensive.

As I got older, the thought of driving terrified me. Being in control, and responsible for a huge chunk of steel on the road.

Now I have little interest in having a car. I can't justify the cost of having a car on the road and all the expenses of maintaining a car for what I'd use it for.

However, I do feel that the ability to drive is an essential skill to have so although I have little interest in having a car, for the past year or so I have been wanting to at least learn how to drive so my 2026 New Years Resolution is going to be that.

I'll be 45 in a few months and there's no excuse to not at least know how to drive.

Have my full license 23 years, but when I lived in the city, I never needed a car, only reason I ended up getting a car was cause I moved to a rural area and the public transport was non existent,

Couldn’t imagine not being able to drive now though, when your young, you don’t think of the freedom being able to drive gives you

As I said in an earlier post, I just can't justify it for what I'd use it for.

I'm single with no kids and I can walk to work in 35 minutes.

And I actually like train and bus journeys.

So it's not essential for me.

I've been driving 30 odd years now!! My parents made sure we all learned how to drive!! It's great having that independence, being able to go off someplace for the day!! I need to have the full licence for my job so I'm glad I did the test when I did!!

Have 40 yrs done now passed first time after two lessons the handbrake cable broke on my MK1 Ford Esc. but the clutch was well worn so tester did not notice.

Different times then was hoping to move up to trucks but things took a different course.

Some people just don't like driving tho and that's up to them I don't see why it bothers other people either I went on a date recently and she asked do I drive I said no and she said ah I couldn't be dating someone that doesn't drive and didn't drive herself so at the end of the day she wanted a driver not a guy to date 😂😂

I find myself using public transport more often now. I live close to the Dublin, Galway line, so either city is handier and cheaper by train. A return ticket to Dublin is less than €20 and an hour on the train has me in Dublin, you would pay that for parking alone in Dublin for a day. And able to avoid all the hassle of sitting in traffic in both city's, I think Galway is even worse than Dublin for traffic. But anywhere else I have to use my car.

I was early 20s when I started driving, offered a job with a van so took the plunge, not a cork native, so I can see why alot of people dont drive in the big urban areas with semi decent public transport, but it really limits your job opportunities if you dont drive, used to work in the construction industry and I have no love for driving but unfortunately I think its a life skill that should be taught in schools

I'm the same as you Lolly I've been driving 33 years as well. Bought my own car back then and learnt to drive.I loved and still do love the freedom it gives me.

I was usually the designated driver on nights out when younger as I prefered to drive than have to wait around for one of the two taxis in the town at the time for spin home.

I'm driving 23 years now and have a love/hate with it. I'm glad I have the skill but prefer being a passenger or taking a bus/train if I can. It's a shame car insurance is so high for young learners, trying to get from the theory test to full licence is really expensive

Learnt on a tractor 40 years ago at the age of 8,Ferguson 20,dad bought me a field car the following summer and i never lost the love of it.I think for my generation it was a form of freedom like no other.With the modern generation of cars the skill is becoming dulled down and the desire to own a vehicle now doesn’t seem as treasured as it once was.Guess im just getting old 😁

I passed my test first time in September 1983 and many of my friends who had been driving farm equipment since they were 10 or 11 failed their tests multiple times due to bad habits and not knowing the rules of the road and didn't actually pass until a few years after me.

I was always the designated driver long before I owned a car and those friends who had a car handed me the keys on a Friday evening and I was responsible for leaving them home over the weekend and having the use of their cars.

I bought my first car in 1985 and have either owned or been provided with a company car ever since.

I genuinely haven't been on a train since I was 16 and the only time I've been on a bus in that time has been going to or from an airport or on a trip abroad.

I've only ever had one job that I could walk to the office but that was pointless as my job involved driving 1000 miles a week around the country so there wasn't much point walking to the office.

Every other job has involved a long commute or antisocial hours and couldn't involve public transport.

My trip to work now takes an hour. If I was to use public transport it would take 3 hours and involve 4 different buses.

My kids have all owned their own cars and been independent almost as soon as they passed their tests.

I have a family member who will be 58 next birthday and he has never driven and has never had any interest. I asked him last year why and he said it literally scared the shit out of him and he couldn't handle the stress.

Driving since I was 18! Then you could drive alone on a provisional license! And because of a huge backlog the Motor Transport Department gave anyone who held a second provisional license (meaning you were driving for nearly a year) a full license.

Unfortunately I didn’t have so had to take a test back home in Leitrim.

Decided to wait for traffic to reduce after work before driving home to Leitrim from Dublin - for my test. I had few drinks with a friend. (Those were the days) but the evening went on! Tried to get into my house that night but my parents were staying and had put the chain on the door thinking I was in Leitrim!

Dilemma: should I wake them at midnight and have to explain or just drive three hours home.

I chose to drive home desperately trying to find anything on the radio to keep me awake.

Had a few hours sleep, a morning lesson, passed the test and on the road back to Dublin by early afternoon!!

Tests were very different then to now. Wouldn’t be without a car - always loved driving. The freedom and independence it allows and now with voice messages on what’s app and Telegram facilitates for quick meets and changes to plans at short notice! 🤦‍♀️😈

I couldn't be without the car/van. I'm always going somewhere at some ungodly hour of the morning and if you don't have a car then you're not going.

I don't know anyone who doesn't drive but I know lots of ppl who drive badly but I guess that's a whole other story. Mind the roads out there ppl and for the love of God use your indicators

I learnt to drive in our farm as a kid, Toyota Bluebird- used to bring feed around the fields, no car seats in the back- that car just kept going for years. Now my 11 year old is learning how to drive on the farm (not the blue bird). It’s independence and you can’t put a price on that.

Driving since I was 17. Cant be with out a car in the country. Id be lost without it

15 years I think. Back on the motorbike aswell, only 4years experience there. But yeah, I couldn't wait to start driving when I was young. Hate traffic, and avoid driving in Dublin, normally it's drive to redcow and Luas in the rest of the way.

I remember my dad letting drive the car in dollymount beach.. at about 10…

Couldn’t wait until I could actually get a car and drive and it literally became essential when my lift to work (night shift) decided he was leaving so I had 2 weeks to get my ass in gear.. bought a Japanese import 1L diesel and drove to work a week later absolutely terrified on back roads in north dublin/kildare.

Did my test about a year later and passed.. it was handy being allowed to drive alone on second provisional..

Being able to drive means independence for you in that dept & it gives you some sense of freedom ...work , gigs , concerts, sports, parties etc etc ..you can get to places without depending on others or other ways , of course your own transport means💰💰💰💰....

Yes I remember most of my number plates and even one of my dad's number plates of a car he had when I was only 6 years old. It was a fancy sporty car that he bought new back in the day. I've no idea why the reg no stuck with me all these years but I could rattle it off as if it was the plate of the vehicle I'm driving now. Wierd

Got my bike license the day I turned 16 and my car one the day I turned 17. But I could drive way before that.

For urban young people the want/need just isn't there anymore. The likes of electric bikes and scooters give them the local independence that we never had unless we got a car (tax,insurance, licence etc).

Driving is work, hobby, life, to us.
