Based in Kerry, work in Cork.

I'm not familiar with it. It's a particular type of depression that men suffer from (obviously) but how does it differ from depression?

How it was explained to me was by a professional counsellor, male functional depression is when a males only reason for still been here is, they dont want the people left behind to suffer, so they keep going with every day life, fighting the bad clouds, never taking that final step, but slowly becoming emotionally numb and just functioning

Probably a much more common condition than is recognised in society. It can be managed with counselling/CBT, exercise, hobbies and or short term medication.

Its good to talk......and it's also good to walk.

Build a wall around you to protect yourself, which you can only do one brick at a time. But make sure to leave an opening for others to enter your life to give you support...they are the mortar that holds the bricks together.

Each day is a new dawn with new possibilities.

Seek help, gain happiness.

Depression isnt taboo anymore I don't think, but it is such a difficult illness to live with, for the person who has it and those around them.

A man in my life had it, he was functional ie still working, but overused alcohol to cope which made it even more difficult

I go to a cbt/counsellor. See him every 6 weeks. Started over 2 years ago going weekly. Was in a very dark place. But it’s a lot better now. We all need to talk. My advice to anyone is just see a counsellor. Even if it’s just a couple of times a year. It’s changed my life

interesting I can see that as i was like that when I was in real bad way when went off my anti depressants was only thing stopping me from killing myself that and didn't want die TBF . Now back on them months I'm more less fine but tired go off them twice and was really bad way means just have stay on them chemicals prob mess brain up if go off them

Some factual info from NHS.uk

Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms.

They range from lasting feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness, to losing interest in the things you used to enjoy and feeling very tearful. Many people with depression also have symptoms of anxiety.

There can be physical symptoms too, such as feeling constantly tired, sleeping badly, having no appetite or sex drive, and various aches and pains.

The symptoms of depression range from mild to severe. At its mildest, you may simply feel persistently low in spirit, while severe depression can make you feel suicidal, that life is no longer worth living.

It is advised to see a doctor if symptoms persist for longer than 2 weeks.

Ah, I see. I've been there myself, particularly during my active alcoholism.

Quitting drinking gave me the space to work on the underlying issues. I did a bit of counselling but by far and away the biggest game changer for me was meditation. In particular a practice called Loving Kindness (or "metta" meditation - whence the username).

My meditation practice has completely lapsed with the past year and a half and I'm aware of old thought patterns returning. But the benefit of the practice I've done, has helped me to recognise them for what they are.
