"I'm not familiar with it. It's a particular type of depression that men suffer from (obviously) but how does it differ from depression?" How it was explained to me was by a professional counsellor, male functional depression is when a males only reason for still been here is, they dont want the people left behind to suffer, so they keep going with every day life, fighting the bad clouds, never taking that final step, but slowly becoming emotionally numb and just functioning

"Not a easy subject, been there myself, do people not see it or is it taboo issue? " Depression isnt taboo anymore I don't think, but it is such a difficult illness to live with, for the person who has it and those around them. A man in my life had it, he was functional ie still working, but overused alcohol to cope which made it even more difficult ![]()

"I go to a cbt/counsellor. See him every 6 weeks. Started over 2 years ago going weekly. Was in a very dark place. But it’s a lot better now. We all need to talk. My advice to anyone is just see a counsellor. Even if it’s just a couple of times a year. It’s changed my life " ![]()

I've been there myself, particularly during my active alcoholism. Quitting drinking gave me the space to work on the underlying issues. I did a bit of counselling but by far and away the biggest game changer for me was meditation. In particular a practice called Loving Kindness (or "metta" meditation - whence the username). My meditation practice has completely lapsed with the past year and a half and I'm aware of old thought patterns returning. But the benefit of the practice I've done, has helped me to recognise them for what they are.
