Ok so this is a strange one and obviously not swing related but iv noticed recently how few drivers flash their headlights to warn about speed vans. I did a long journey recently and met 5 vans and only a couple of people flashed to warn about them. Years ago everyone warned you. Im not talking about warning the guy doin 100mph goin past a school. Just the ordinary joe soap tipping along. So do you guys flash (your headlights) or not flash and if you dont why not? Thanks.

I only flash if there is an obstacle in the road like a crash or loose cow in the road. I don’t flash for speed vans or check points or the likes.

Be no need for speed vans if people just obeyed the rules of the road.

I don't warn people speeding

I'd say we're probably just aware of the dangers/consequences of speeding these days, and that we might be letting a dangerous driver off the hook by warning them. If I get done for speeding it's on me, not the people who didn't warn me about the speed camera.

Given how many people are dying on the roads I don't see any reason to warn people that are speeding.

Let them get the points on their license and if they keep getting caught let them loose their license.

Nah- not a hope. The shithead in me is only delighted when others get points for speeding. Hopefully they learn their lesson and slow down and not kill anyone in the future.

Correct. The vans are nothing to do with saving lives. They are a source of revenue. I dont speed and again im not talking about people flying it. Im talking about people getting hit at 85kph in an 80kph zone.

Personally i flash everyone except people who are clearly driving dangerously.

They cost the State about €10 million a year to operate the speed van contract. It's a cost, not 'revenue'. That's money that could go to much better use elsewhere, but has to be spent on this to reduce the number of drivers killing themselves and passengers.

I flash loads of oncoming drivers to get them to slow down. Sometimes there happens to be a speed van around.

Too many unmarked cars on the road and if you flash one of them big fine and points so it's not worth it. Just us Waze sat nav instead.

Wasn't arguing, just found your comment funny , rainman couldn't guage the speed of an incoming vehicle , maybe try driving along yourself without looking at the speedometer and guess your speed , see if you're far off

So you cant guesstimate a cars speed? You cant tell a car that travelling at approx 80 compared to approx 100???? Honestly???? I started driving at 17 and when younger worked with cars so yes 100% id know a car driving at around 80 compared to around 100.

You only have a small number of fixed cameras in Southern Ireland and all the mobile ones are run by private companies I believe...

Correct me if I am wrong.

Nafferton, nr Driffield.

It is always said by the gombeens who are so kind as to run our lives that the purpose of such devices are to act as a deterrent to speeding and to encourage us to moderate our speed. Not to raise money.

In that same spirit, flicking of our headlamps to warm oncoming is surely acting at one with the laudable goal of our esteemed betters.

I'm not sure why they get so hot and bothered by us actually taking the at their word.

So many people are using the App Waze to warn of speed vans ahead flashing is becoming less relevant.

Use the app mysekf and its really good if youre not taring the arse out of it, having said that i don't generally speed, it's easy get caught at some of those sneaky spots just as you're entering a 60 kph..

If I feel that it's an located in an unwarranted cash collection unit, I'll flash (my lights)...

My understanding is that while camera vans are fitted with cameras bith front and rear, it’s actually only the rear-facing camera that detects a driver’s speed, with the front camera serving to provide additional imagery of any vehicle caught speeding by the rear camera.

I am still unsure if the van only detects the speed of vechicles approaching from it's rear or does it also capture the speed of traffic moving away from the rear of the van.

I wonder how many of my single and double digit gestures have been recorded over the years by the front facing camera.

It is an offence to warn other road users of something like that.

Remember a case years ago in Dublin. Guards had a checkpoint, set up a motorbike guard further up the road to watch out for flashers. Bike goes after one and pulls him in. Effer was already a disqualified driver. No tax, no insurance (obviously) and no nct. Effer walked home and had a fine and another conviction to his roster!

Gave me a right chuckle. The last thing you want to be doing in his situation is drawing attention to yourself!

I've noticed it too, it mirrors a part of modern Irish society in a way. Everyone for themselves. Almost happy to see someone get penalty points.

I still flash the lights.
