Vent away! Sometime bouncers are on a power trip and sometimes bouncers are dickheads. They’ve to make snap judgements based on little information.

Somewhere

Having worked on doors for a few years in my younger days i can safely say I met my fair share of lads who were just not right for it.

You need a calm demeanour and a genuine empathy for others. All the best guys I ever worked with had it and rarely had to get physical in any way.

The types being referred to in by the Op thought it gave them licence to be a "big tough guy".

Truth about most of those types is they get found out when it comes on top.

If you talked to most people who had a problem you'd get way further than being a dick.

In saying that there are people who dont want to listen and are active looking to be a dick. That's when the stakes change and it's time to leave.

All clowns 🤡 amounted to nothing with their lives so they throw a black jacket and gloves on and think they can bully people. Best part of them wouldn’t tie their laces.

I always respect the bouncer power-trip or not, i was one many years ago, if your not getting in your not getting in.

Show respect, and you will almost always get in.

I was a bouncer while i was a soldier. I wasn't on a power trip. I stopped violence and d*unken behaviour that ruined the majority of people's nights. People who couldn't handle their drink but were just messy were treated with dignity, thrown out, not barred.

The violent fucktards, well, they weren't treated violently in return. But I wasn't going to be gentle. Depends on the degree if force necessary to defuse the situation to stop them geing a danger to themselves and others.

You have some issues if you think they're all clowns. Are you a messy d*unk?

Is their job to be assholes? Because that is what the op was venting about. Even if costumers are being dicks, bouncers should still be professional.

Some of them definitely traded in their cop-on, and personality for a pair of gloves.

I was refused entry a couple of weeks back to a bar in Cork at 9pm as I'd had "enough to drink for one night".

Best part about it was I was the designated driver....farcical.

The West

There was a guy in a chat group that I'm in recently who's main job was working door's.

He was a very angry man and came on most days to talk about the the idiot's he'd put in there place at work and he loved to talk about the fights he been in and how good was at violence.

He'd just been fired too.

There might be doorman that are assholes but most business owners wouldn't want because they are responsible for people safety. If security workers act unprofessionally it's important to report them.

I can't think of anyplace I've been that actually required a doorman since I was in my late 20s so I can't comment on current behaviour.

Way back then each premises employed their own bouncers who were all individuals with their own rules but that started to change locally at least when door security companies started up and they had to be properly licenced.

Before that, most of the doormen I knew were county GAA players and of the 20 or so I came across, only one had a poor reputation. The rest were all very laid back and calm in tight situations.

The only time I can remember them having difficulty was when a group of women started fighting and none of the doormen wanted to get involved. Women didn't do doors back then.

We had to employ licenced door staff for monthly events we were running for teenagers to avoid insurance claims etc. Up to that point it was just committee members. They were all very professional.

I've worked with a few people who have done doors over the years and they all had responsible roles in the fire service or as sales reps and in one case a company director so I disagree with the statement above about them not amounting to much and having to do it as a last resort.

There will always be bad apples but the majority never have any issues because they deal with the problem before it arises.

Usually all power tripping clowns, 9 times out of 10 if I got to an establishment that has these door people I’m never just allowed to walk straight in and even in places I’ve never been to before. I think they all feel threatened by someone who might be taller/stronger looking.

Now I always pay them compliments it makes them uncomfortable

Been there myself. Refuses for being too d*unk. Despite being blood sober. Ended up working with that doorman, only to witness him first hand doing it again.... what a horrible night on the door. Two or three of our staff were power-trippers. Rest, just wanted to earn a few euro and let people have safe, enjoyable nights.

I miss the good craic, both with customers and coworkers. I do not miss the violence.
