Dublin 8 Mon 28th

These were the first of these fitted in ROI I believe

Got a bloody notice in the post to say I was caught recently with an average speed being assessed as 129km/h in what is a 120km/h motorway

Anyone know of any loopholes or successful appeals against these things and the accuracy of their measurements?!!

Thanks

I think the port tunnel was first, then the M7. There's now some in Cavan, Mayo and either Meath or Louth with a few more being installed at the moment.

It's worth remembering that if you were doing 120 your speedometer would most likely be showing as doing closer to 130, maybe 127ish?

In that case if you got done for doing close to 130 your speedometer probably showed you as doing well over 130. Given that it's average speed, that suggests that if you did on or below the actual speed limit for any part of it, then your speedometer would probably have been showing you as doing 140 or above for at least part of that stretch.

I'm not sure if there's any room for dispute unless the signage wasn't clear? You could always chance it but there's a rough penalty if you contest it in court and lose, ending up with double they points.

Fair question but I suppose my initial feeling on getting the notice in the post was genuine surprise as it was a weekend morning and I wasn't in a particular hurry as I recall it.

And that's the thing that's frustrating as it's been a couple of weeks.

Also it's different than when a traffic cop catches you on the spot or even the speed vans cos you immediately check or adjust your speed when you see and come across one.

I posed the question as anecdotally there would be stories about speeding fines and points being applied by the authorities but have been overturned due to faults/inconsistencies with equipment etc

And just wondered if others have heard of issues with these particular fixed cameras and their accuracy....

As I said above I didn't feel I would have been doing excessive speed or had any particular reason to do so on the day

Other side of it is its a 2.0 litre diesel newish car and unfortunately sometimes, especially on motorway driving it's hard to feel or know the difference between doing 120 or 130km/h.....

Just my opinion

It is hard to know. If I have the wind at my back on the M4 my car likes to do about 135km/h without me noticing so I really have to keep an eye on it. I'm pretty scrupulous about not speeding because I already have a few points for a different stupid mistake.

The thing is if your average speed was 129 that means you were likely doing a sustained speed over a distance. Making it harder to not notice. Or, as above, an egregious speed in burst's.

I would say it's tricky to dispute. I think that's the point of that system too

I find cruise control on that stretch of road to be handy. Pop it into 119/120 and sit back and laugh as you see all the people zoom past you

Everywhere

Most cars over read the indicated speed by 3 to 5kph.also a thing to note, if you have bigger wheels than stock or real low profile tyres it can throw the speedo out in either direction. Best thing to do is run the waze app on your phone and there's a GPS speedo on that along with alerts from other users to speed traps etc.

True the spedo reads a bit higher but most modern cars have intelligent speed limiters so i set it at whatever the road sign says it also applies brakes if you come on someone out for a Sunday drive in the middle of the road

People actually still use pedals on the motorway?

Cruise control, 125km/h, legs up!

Lots of cars don't have cruise control.

Cruise control buttons on the wheel. Slow down/speed up turn it off or back on again. Very relaxing drive on a motorway on the flat, uphill or downhill it doesn't matter all the one speed. Good for fuel effeciency too.

As far as I know apart from appeals when these cameras were first installed, there's little wiggle room these days.

That part of the road is treacherous and using Cruise control is actually a hindrance due to flash flooding.

But it's very clearly marked and hard to miss the big yellow poles with the cameras either end!

Nope you won't get anywhere, if your averaged 129, you were doing 135 average on speedo. I haven't yet encountered a speedo that's calibration isn't off by at least 5km. Unfortunately gonna have to take the punishment and go with it. Your only way is if you get caught in average speed zone, is stop for a couple of mins, or really slow down to reduce average. It's well signposted on the zones. New zone is on old slane Dublin road and they are making a killing atm.

Thanks all for the replies and taking the time to do so.

Nothing for it only to take the medicine and cough up the €180 fine😩

And yep, slow down and take more care

Get yourself 3 speeding fines which takes you to 9 penalty points.

Knowing one more strike and you are off the road is a very good way to focus the mind on the relevant speed limits.
