Gift of the gab

Hereabouts

With less shared public spaces for casual chats with friends and strangers, when we look at screens rather than for company, are we losing our famous gift of the gab?

In what way have we less social space?

I don’t think we have. I feel it’s evolved to include social media. With everyone’s busy lives it’s more convenient to catch up on local gossip and news than meeting face to face but put a few of us in a room and we’d natter away for hours.

I suppose im thinking of where I used to get into random chats: pubs,bus stops,on the train, markets,the local green on the estate, outside the shops.... as you say people are busy, or act like they are with their phones out and earphones in!!

I suppose I'm showing my age when Im nostalgic for the days neighbours sat on walls of a Sunday having a natter

There was a a touch of nostalgia about it. We once lived in a very rural community and would only get to see people when doing the weekly shop or going to mass of a Sunday or whatever so there was a lot to catch up on. Whereas now as soon as someone does anything it’s straight up on social media. Plus those Sunday morning natters are probably happening on sidelines now with parents bringing their children hither and thither to different sporting events

I was away for a night a few days ago and when we went down to the bar to grab dinner and a few drinks we were seated in an area with 5 other tables, every single person on each table was on their phone during dinner even whilst eating, what was worse the kids at one table were on tablets while the parents were scrolling on their phones....

There's a few problems now in the hospitality industry

Very hard to get staff that have the gift of the gab as its called as young people who used to work in our hotels / restaurants dont seem to be available anymore

Lots of Indian students in Dublin now who are very quiet and shy so it's noticed when they're dealing with customers / tourists

I've interviewed over 200 Indian students this year and about 150 of them are working with me so just an observation....

Also as most people seem to live on their phones they don't want to interact with others

Is it happening with older people too.....impossible to meet men or women in your normal life anymore

When I'm away from civilisation and meet people, the vast majority are happy to stop and chat even if it's only to ask for directions or advice or even share a cuppa or a sandwich. Most are very gabby.

There are some though who are walking through amazing mountain areas with headphones or earbuds and my personal bugbear a fucking boombox!!

I've no idea what the point is of any of that.

I'm in 30 or 40 coffee shops a week and every one of them has a few regulars sitting in a corner on their phones but most people are chatting away happily.

If I go out with friends the only time the phones come out is to Google something we are discussing.

Two thirds of my walking group aren't on social media at all and the rest of us who are never post anything on there apart from the odd photo of where we are walking etc.

Two people in the group who are in their late 40s and early 50s don't even carry a phone when we are are out on the hills and they never have mobile data turned on so they only reply to WhatsApp messages when they are on their home WiFi.

I looked at my phone once as one of my kids had texted me, i just said sorry ive to get this, opened the message, replied and put it way....

There was one couple, she was scrolling away and nodding while he was talking to her 🙄

The West

It's a bit of column A and a bit of column B for me.

I'm not a naturally social person outside my circle of friends and I have no facility to make small talk at all.

The net effect of technology for me is that I actually chat to more people more often.

I have one friend who chats to every single person that comes within ten feet of us and I'm always amazed. My brain just doesn't work like that.

I do like having aimless ongoing chats with my friends over messaging apps though.

In work I'm meeting people all the time and it's mostly the mid to.older generation that'll gladly have a chat and it's always amazing what a smile and a hello can do for yourself and whoever your saying it to

Two of my daughters work in hospitality, one here and one in Australia.

When she was home for a few weeks she got a text from her boss saying they all missed her Irish banter and her no shit Sherlock attitude.

She said that out there they aren't as keen on the "customer is always right" approach.

Initially she followed her training from here and was really polite and soft-spoken until the manager took her to one side and said she needed to be a little less respectful.

Over there it's a case of "the customer will be respectful or the customer will be shown the door!"

She said that not everyone can grasp that but they all think the Irish are amazing for their ability to speak to anyone, anywhere.

I got myself a 720ml travel mug for Xmas...so loads of coffee in the morning

I suppose my middle of the night could be the middle of your evening
