I don't always make eye contact when being intimate, usually because my mind is elsewhere... but if I'm speaking to someone absolutely need eye contact. I have a friend who is autistic and finds direct eye contact very challenging and very intense. She will avoid it naturally and I know she really appreciates when people don't put neurotypical expectations on her.

I guess it depends on the context. Personally, I like eye contact. There's an entire level or flirtation that can be done with eyes alone.

For instance, a quick glance followed by an averted one, followed by another can convey a fair amount of information and interest. Or, in closer proximity, an averted gaze followed by direct eye contact can send a very powerful message.
